Abstract
We investigate a 1970s' series of papers by Fields detailing a concept for local minima of the lattice sphere packing function. We observe that Fields' concept of a "fragile lattice" essentially corresponds to the more recent notion of a weakly eutactic lattice. We also argue that fragile lattices are not a very natural opposite concept to extreme lattices, despite this being the original motivation: extreme lattices, too, become trivially fragile when an artificial restriction is removed from the definition.
We introduce Fields' ideas - which correspond to the more modern concepts of minimal classes and weak eutaxy properties - as a part of a general introduction to lattice theory and sphere packings. This culminates in a proof of Voronoi's characterization of extreme lattices.
We then investigate two conjectures about automorphisms set by Fields in his papers. The first conjecture is disproved by a simple counterexample. Attempts to disprove the second conjecture lead us to discover the existence of perfect forms with trivial automorphism groups.
Työssä tarkastellaan 1970-luvulla julkaistuja Fieldsin artikkeleja, jotka esittelevät konseptin pallopakkauksen tiheysfunktion lokaalista minimoijasta. Huomataan, että Fieldsin "hauraan hilan" (engl. Fragile lattice) konsepti vastaa suurin piirtein myöhempää "heikosti eutaktisen hilan" (engl. weakly eutactic lattice) määritelmää. Samalla selvennetään myös, miksi hauras hila ei ole kovinkaan luonnollinen vastakohta äärimmäiselle hilalle (extreme lattice) määritelmän alkuperäisestä motivaatiosta huolimatta: myös äärimmäisistä hiloista tulee hauraita, jos Fieldsin määritelmästä poistetaan tietty mielivaltainen rajoite.
Työssä esitellään Fieldsin ideat, jotka vastaavat nykyisiä minimaalisten luokkien (minimal class) ja heikon eutaktisuuden konsepteja, osana yleistä johdatusta hilateoriaan ja pallopakkauksiin. Huipennuksena todistetaan Voronoin äärimmäisten hilojen karakterisaatio. Lopuksi tarkastellaan kahta Fieldsin julkaisuissaan esittämää kysymystä. Ensimmäinen väite todistetaan vääräksi yksinkertaisella vastaesimerkillä. Toista väitettä tutkaillessa löydetään oletettavasti ensimmäiset esimerkit täydellisistä hiloista (perfect lattice), joilla on triviaalit automorfismiryhmät.
