Tietoliikennetekniikan alkuvaiheen opintojen ohjaus ja kehittäminen

Abstract

Teknillisen korkeakoulun tietoliikennetekniikan tutkinto-ohjelman opintojen etenemisen on huomattu olevan keskimääräistä hitaampaa verrattuna muihin TKK:n tutkinto-ohjelmiin. Yksi keskeisistä tutkinto-ohjelman kehityskohteista on opintopolku- ja ohjaussuunnitelman laatiminen. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia, miten opintojen ohjaus tutkinto-ohjelmassa on järjestetty ja mitä kehitystarpeita ohjaukselle on.

Tutkimus oli luonteeltaan sekä kvalitatiivinen että kvantitatiivinen. Tutkimusta varten suoritettiin kirjallisuuskatsaus sekä haastateltiin 36 opiskelijaa, jotka aloittivat opintonsa tietoliikennetekniikan tutkinto-ohjelmassa syksyllä 2009. Yksilöhaastatteluissa selvitettiin opiskelijoiden alkuvaiheen kokemuksia opintoihin, ohjaukseen ja opiskelijaelämään liittyen. Haastattelu sisälsi myös kyselylomakkeen.

Tulosten perusteella havaittiin, että tietoliikennetekniikan ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijat ovat sosiaalisesti integroituneet opiskelijatovereiden kanssa, mutta vuorovaikutus henkilökunnan kanssa on vähäistä. Lisäksi akateeminen integraatio ja sitoutuminen opintoihin ovat suhteellisen heikkoja ja ammattikuvan kehittyminen haastavaa. Lisäohjausta kaivataan erityisesti kurssien korvaavuuksiin liittyviin kysymyksiin, motivaatio-ongelmiin ja monien opintoihin liittyvien valintojen tekemiseen.

Tutkimuksen pohdinta-osiossa muodostettiin ohjaussuunnitelma tietoliikennetekniikan alkuvaiheen opinnoille. Suunnitelma sisältää ohjauspalveluiden määrittelemisen, ohjauksen liittämisen osaksi opetussuunnitelmaa sekä ohjauksen arviointimenetelmät. Ohjauksen järjestämisessä huomioitiin koko opintopolun alkuvaihe. Uusina käytänteinä ehdotettiin muun muassa ohjauspalveluiden selkeyttämistä, ohjauskokonaisuuden laajentamista opetussuunnitelmassa, portfoliotyöskentelyä sekä opintojen seurantaa ja kehityskeskusteluita. Vuorovaikutusta henkilökunnan kanssa tulisi myös lisätä.

The progress of studies has been slower in the degree programme of Communications Engineering when compared to the average at Helsinki University of Technology. One of the main development areas of the degree programme is the creation of a study path and a counselling plan. The goal of this research is to do research on the current counselling services of the degree programme and to find out the areas that need more development.

The nature of the research was both qualitative and quantitative. The research included a literature review and the interviews of 36 students that started in the degree programme of Communications Engineering in autumn 2009. The interviews focused on students' early stage experiences of studies, counselling and student life. A questionnaire was also included.

Based on the results, it was noticed that the first year students of the degree programme of Communications Engineering are socially integrated with fellow students but the interaction between students and faculty is weak. In addition, academic integration and commitment to studies are minor and the development of professional image is challenging for students. More counselling is needed especially with questions relating to the substitution of courses, motivation problems and study selections.

The outcome and conclusion of the research was a counselling plan for the early stage studies of the degree programme of Communications Engineering. The plan includes the definition of counselling services, how to connect counselling to the curriculum and the evaluation tools for counselling. The entire early stage of the study path was taken into account. Some new operation models were proposed like elucidation of counselling services, adding counselling into the curriculum, portfolio working and the follow up of the studies including discussions regarding evaluation and development. In addition, the interaction between students and faculty should be increased.
