Abstract

Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is currently being installed and configured manually for each server. Installing and configuring each server manually takes time and effort and is in no way the optimal solution. Veritas Provisioning Manager (VPM) automates server provisioning by discovering, installing, and configuring multiple servers simultaneously and automatically. Consequently, VPM decreases installation time considerably, but also makes the use of backups easier and faster, and reduces the amount of h errors. The purpose of this study is to verify that VPM can be setup in an MMS system and to research, if VPM can improve installation and backup processes in MMS. The possible improvement of the processes is validated against the performance of the current processes used in MMS. The literature study of this thesis gives a description of MMS and VPM, as well as a general description of provisioning in telecommunications. In addition, special emphasis is put into describing the different installation processes in MMS. However, the main objective of the literature study is to examine VPM' s deployment process that will then be tested in the test. The tests conducted in this thesis aim at defining the improvement VPM has on the execution times of the backup processes jn MMS in Ericsson's test lab and VPM's impact on the MMS installation processes. Based on the tests, it can be observed that VPM provides a considerable benefit to the backup processes in Ericsson's test Iab. However, the tests show that VPM cannot be directly integrated into the current installation processes of MMS. Nevertheless, this study presents alternatjve solutions, which show how VPM could improve the installation processes in MMS.
