Abstract
This thesis explores the endangered profession of silk hand-weaving through the lens of my personal experience, unravelling knots of tension and knowledge to understand the representations of my tool, a 19th-century Jacquard Mechanism. It delves into the love for this machine and the deep sense of responsibility and passionate desire to preserve the legacy of our combined expertise. Central to this exploration is the question of how a discarded tool, in the context of an endangered craft, can serve as a lens to explore the interplay between humans and machines.
Drawing from Bruno Latour’s symmetrical anthropology and material semiotics, this research navigates the historical and cultural journey of “modernity”, examining the myths and ideologies underlying the narratives of innovation, and the technological evolution within prominent European silk hand-weaving industries. It brings forward the figure of the artisan, the paradoxes in the autonomy of craft, and examines the principles colliding in the endangerment of professional craftsmanship.
Through critical and collaborative auto-ethnography and interviews through narrative analysis this inquiry considers semi-automated hand-looms in symbiosis with their weaver and speculates on the potential to reveal weaving as a “technical mode of existence”. Grounded in the attempt to maintain and care for a Jacquard mechanism, as “M” and “W”: machine and weaver, we propose our own story in which "M" becomes a device for a philosophical inquiry. Ultimately, a tool to build a discourse. Together, we materialise a distinct and contemporary narrative to sustain professional textile craftsmanship.
Tämä tutkielma tutkii silkin käsinkudonnan uhanalaista ammattia henkilökohtaisen kokemukseni kautta, purkaen jännitteiden ja tiedon solmuja ymmärtääkseen työkaluni, 1800-luvun Jacquard-mekanismin, representaatioita. Se syventyy tähän koneeseen kohdistuvaan rakkauteen ja syvään vastuuntuntoon sekä intohimoiseen haluun säilyttää yhteisen asiantuntemuksemme perintö. Tämän tutkimuksen keskiössä on kysymys siitä, miten hylätty työkalu, uhanalaisen käsityön kontekstissa, voi toimia linssinä tutkia ihmisten ja koneiden välistä vuorovaikutusta.
Bruno Latourin symmetrisen antropologian ja materiaalisen semiotiikan pohjalta tämä tutkimus navigoi ”moderniteetin” historiallista ja kulttuurista matkaa, tarkastellen innovaatioiden kertomusten taustalla olevia myyttejä ja ideologioita sekä teknologista kehitystä merkittävissä eurooppalaisissa silkin käsinkudonta-alan teollisuuksissa. Se tuo esiin käsityöläisen hahmon, käsityön autonomian paradoksit ja tarkastelee ammatillisen käsityöläisyyden uhan alla olevia periaatteita.
Kriittisen ja yhteistyöhön perustuvan autoetnografian ja narratiivisen analyysin avulla tämä tutkimus tarkastelee puoliksi automatisoituja käsinkudontakoneita niiden kutojan kanssa symbioosissa ja spekuloi kutomisen paljastumisen potentiaalista ”teknisenä olemassaolon muotona”. Pyrkimyksessä ylläpitää ja huoltaa Jacquard-mekanismia, "M" ja "W": kone ja kutoja, esitämme oman tarinamme, jossa "M" muuttuu filosofisen tutkimuksen välineeksi. Lopulta työkaluksi rakentaa diskurssia. Yhdessä materialisoimme selkeän ja nykyaikaisen kertomuksen ammatillisen tekstiilikäsityöläisyyden ylläpitämiseksi.
