Abstract
In product development and product engineering the importance of good aesthetics and good product reliability has grown substantially during the last decade.
Terms such as cost of quality and outside-in design are used widely and every product developer knows exactly what these phrases represent.
The main objective of this thesis was to research today's trends in tangible user interface design.
What is meant by a modern user interface and how it influences product development and product engineering are matters that will be discussed and answered in this paper.
In the literature study the technology behind different user interfaces is clarified.
Due to the objectives of the thesis the emphasis is put on push buttons and switching technologies as well as on different touch screen sensing tools.
Additionally this part thoroughly explains the content behind the thesis' title.
In the experimental part a modern user interface apparatus is developed and manufactured.
The purpose of the developed prototype is to answer modern user interface design languages on the same time as being a reliable easily customized product.
The expression paradigm user interface stands for a clean seamless input device where user interactions are made by gentle touches instead of the old fashion mechanical push-and-click.
On the same time as these touch screens, touch wheels and touch sliders are considered extremely practical, they also reply well on today's minimalistic design trends.
Furthermore, as simple touch switches turn out to be the most reliable input device on today's market there are many facts that speak against the traditional push button.
In 2007 the iPhone with its innovative touchy user interface was the most googled gadget, this thesis explains why.
