Abstract

World Wide Web based services are not solely available for the more or less immobile computers anymore, but are also quickly becoming an integral part of such everyday devices as mobile phones. New technologies, methods and tools are constantly developed to answer to the developing needs of such services. The aim of this Thesis was to evaluate XFormsDB, a framework that tries to simplify Web application development. Also, the XFormsDB based visual tool XIDE was studied. The developed application was Mobile Ticketing that could be used to manage travel card related functions. It is also an example of a widget application that could be run on a modern smart phone with NFC capabilities. The results show that XFormsDB is fully capable framework by providing all the necessary functions, and while XIDE is not quite complete enough yet; it shows the potential of becoming a powerful tool for development.

WWW-pohjaiset palvelut eivät ole enää saatavilla ainoastaan enemmän tai vähemmän paikallaan pysyville tietokoneille, vaan niistä on nopeasti tulossa osa myös sellaisia jokapäiväisiä laitteita kuten matkapuhelimet. Uusia teknologioita, menetelmiä ja työkaluja kehitetään jatkuvasti vastaamaan palveluiden tarpeisiin. Tämän työn tavoitteena oli arvioida sovelluskehitystä XFormsDB:llä, joka yrittää yksinkertaistaa WWW-sovellusten kehittämistä. Lisäksi tutkittiin XFormsDB:hen pohjautuvaa visuaalista XIDE työkalua. Työssä kehitettiin Mobile Ticketing -sovellus, jota voitaisiin käyttää matkakortin hallintaan. Se on myös esimerkki widget-sovelluksesta, joka voisi toimi modernissa NFC älypuhelimessa. Tulokset osoittavat, että XFormsDB on pätevä sovelluskehys, sillä se tarjosi kaikki sovelluksessa tarvitut toiminnot. XIDE ei vielä sisältänyt kaikkea tarvittavaa, mutta se osoitti kuitenkin suurta potentiaalia tullakseen tehokkaaksi kehitystyökaluksi.
