Abstract

In this study, the effect of the multiple recycling (up to three generations) of the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) on the performance properties and the moisture damage was experimentally investigated, building on previous Finnish research efforts and relying on laboratory experimentation. First, loose asphalt mixtures were aged in the oven to generate 1 time, 2 times, and 3 times aged RAP. Next, 50% of artificial aged RAP was used to prepare a set of mixtures under different recycled levels. The moisture susceptibility, the resistance to rutting at high temperatures, and abrasion due to studded tires were tested on the entire set of asphalt mixtures. With the increase in the recycling iteration, recycled, rerecycled, and tri-recycled asphalt mixtures showed better properties in moisture susceptibility, rutting resistance, and abrasion against studded tires compared to the neat asphalt mixtures. The present experimental study provides evidence of the possibility of investigating multiple recycling of RAP in the Nordic regions.
