Abstract
This work began as a personal attempt to examine and possibly develop one's way of working through a singular examination of their process of design with the purpose of evaluating its outcomes in the form of a case study. Along the way, the focus turned from judging the outcomes of a process in to the judging of a process through its outcomes.
The work has been conducted as an exploration, that is to say that it is a venture in to something unknown, and is thus largely based on intuitive and heuristic decision making, working mainly with hindsight and the process of trial and error.
The case study is executed in two parts with a chapter consisting of introspection placed in between these parts. This chapter of introspection is an attempt to reflect on the findings and interpretations that came of the initial stage of the case study, thus working as a developmental phase in which the second phase of the case study is formulated in a purposeful manner.
In part one, the aspirations, structure and goals of this work will be outlined.
In part two, the case study will be initiated. In this stage of the case study the process of ideation will be examined through a practical experiment regarding the process of divergent thinking in the ideation phase, as well as the formation of a taxonomy of its outcomes. Six specific proposals for an architectural competition are made as an outcome of this. These proposals and the process itself are then self-evaluated.
In part three, I will reflect upon the findings of the first phase of the case study, and attempt to interpret their meaning to my personal, particular, and habitual way of working, and attempt to formulate an alternative set of means for the conception of architecture to be examined in relation to these findings.
In part four, the case study is continued. I will reform the six works from before by virtue of an alternative set of means, geared towards the conception of architecture, which have been formulated as outcome of the introspection done in part three. These reformed works and the process itself are then self-evaluated.
In part five, ending statements will be made in the form of a summary, a conclusion, and an epilogue.
As this thesis is a venture in to something unknown, it is in fact a mere practice of trial and error informed by heuristic decision making, at best providing a new and novel perspective to view one's personal form of practice from, as well as to interpret its substance so as to be able to infer a purposeful path of development towards the future with a degree of certainty and nothihg more.
This thesis is atheoretical and as such does not attempt to contribute to any theories of architecture. This work is a mere attempt to give a detailed description of a singular case study process and its findings. The outcomes of this work are to become a part of the cumulatively expanding knowledge base of the discipline of architecture; that is to say, its principles. This work is a singular account of a persons endeavours in the profession in the condition of an entrepreneur, and as such, it is a mere reference for further discussions to be formulated.
This work purposefully sacrifices precision in an attempt to enlarge the domain of discourse. There is no formulaic method with which to come to objectivity in the conclusions of this work, instead the conclusions are reliant on inductively produced interpretations and observations which are made along the process through self-reflection.
Instead of having a clear end in sight, the exploration must function as an end in and of itself, as no other ends can truly be certain for such an action.
The thesis ends at mere suggestive conclusions in terms of how one may perhaps be able to practice architecture as an entrepreneur in the Finnish context without becoming alienated from their creative pursuits in the process of doing so.
Tämä työ alkoi työn laatijan henkilökohtaisena yrityksenä tarkastella ja mahdollisesti kehittää omaa työskentelytapaansa tarkastelemalla yksittäistä suunnitteluprosessia tarkoituksenaan arvioida sen tuloksia tapaustutkimuksen muodossa. Matkan varrella työn painopiste siirtyi prosessin tulosten arvioinnista prosessin arvioimiseen sen tulosten kautta.
Työ on tehty konseptuaalisena tutkimusmatkana, eli se on seikkailua kohti jotain tuntematonta ja se perustuu suurelta osin intuitiiviseen ja heuristiseen päätöksentekoon. Työskentely tapahtuu pääasiassa yrityksen ja erehdyksen sekä jälkiviisauden keinoin.
Tapaustutkimus on toteutettu kahdessa osassa. Näiden osien väliin on sijoitettu itsetutkiskelua sisältävä luku, joka toimii yrityksenä reflektoida tapaustutkimuksen alkuvaiheen havaintoja ja tulkintoja, toimien siten kehitysvaiheena, jossa tapaustutkimuksen toinen vaihe muotoillaan tarkoituksenmukaisesti.
Ensimmäisessä luvussa hahmotellaan tämän työn pyrkimyksset, rakenne sekä tavoitteet.
Toisessa luvussa aloitetaan tapaustutkimus. Tässä tapaustutkimuksen vaiheessa tarkastelen ideointiprosessia käytännön kokeilun kautta, joka liittyy ideoinnin divergenttiajattelu -prosessiin sekä taksonomian luomiseen kyseisen prosessin myötä. Tämän tuloksena syntyy kuusi konkreettista rakennussuunnitelmaehdotusta arkkitehtuurikilpailuun. Lopuksi suunnitelmia ja suunnitteluprosessia tarkastellaan itse-arvioinnin keinoin.
Kolmannessa luvussa pohditaan tapaustutkimuksen ensimmäisen vaiheen havaintoja ja pyritään tulkitsemaan niiden merkitystä tekijän henkilökohtaiselle ja tavanomaiselle työskentelytavalle, sekä yritetään hahmottaa vaihtoehtoisia lähestymistapoja luovaan työskentelyyn sekä arkkitehtuurin suunnitteluun näiden tulkintojen kautta.
Neljännessä osassa tapaustutkimusta jatketaan. Aiemmin tuotetut kuusi kilpailuehdotusta tulkitaan uudestaan vaihtoehtoisen työstelenytavan puitteissa. Lopuksi uudistettuja suunnitelmia ja vaihtoehtoista suunnitteluprosessia tarkastellaan itse-arvioinnin keinoin.
Osassa viisi esitetään loppulausunto yhteenvedon, päätelmän ja epilogin muodossa.
Koska tämä opinnäytetyö on seikkailu kohti jotain tuntematona, se pohjautuu yrittämiseen ja erehtymiseen, sekä perustuu heuristiseen päätöksentekoon, joka tarjoaa parhaimmillaan uudenlaisen näkökulman tekijän henkilökohtaisen arkkitehtuurin harjoitusmuodon tarkasteluun ja tulkintaan. Tämän pyrkimyksenä on tuottaa havaintoja jotka voisivat suhteellisella varmuudella johdatella työn tekijää kohti tarkoituksenmukaista kehityspolkua arkkitehtuurin harjoittajana ammattilaisena ja yrittäjänä.
Tämä opinnäytetyö on epäteoreettinen eikä pyri edistämään mitään arkkitehtuurin teorioita. Tämä työ on vain ja ainoastaan yritys antaa yksityiskohtainen kuvaus yksittäisestä tapaustutkimusprosessista ja sen tuloksista. Tämän työn lopputulemista on tarkoitus tulla osa arkkitehtuurin kumulatiivisesti laajenevaa tietopohjaa; sen periaatteita ja totuuksia, joihin pohjautuen arkkitehtuuria tutkitaan ja harjoitetaan. Tämä teos on yksittäinen kuvaus yksittäisen henkilön ponnisteluista ammatissaan yrittäjänä ja sellaisenaan työ voi toimia lähtökohtaisesti vain virikkeenä laajamittaisemmille rakentaville keskusteluille sen kuvaamista aiheista.
Tämä työ uhraa tarkkuuden tavoittelun pyrkimyksissään laajentaa arkkitehtuuridiskurssin sisältöjä. Tämän työn päätelmät perustuvat induktiivisesti tuotettuihin havaintoihin ja näistä tehtyihin tulkintoihin joita tehdään prosessin varrella itsereflektion keinoin eikä työ näin ollen tuota mitään objektiviista tietoa minkään tieteellisen tai positivistisen metodin tai kaavan kautta.
Selkeän päämäärän sijaan tutkimusmatkan kohti tuntematonta on toimittava tavoiteltavana päämääränä itsessään, koska kyseiselle toiminnalle ei voi asettaa mitään muita päämääriä.
Tämä opinnäytetyö päättyy pelkkiin vihjaileviin johtopäätöksiin siitä, kuinka arkkitehtuuria voi kenties harjoittaa yrittäjänä suomalaisessa kontekstissa ilman että harjoittaja vieraantuu luovista pyrkimyksistään sen tiimellyksessä.
