Since TCP/IP network broke ground, new simpler and faster communication styles are being designed and implemented. In order to build telephony into IP networks and cooperate it with Plain Old Telephone System (POTS), much effort has been made. SIP, short for Session Initiation Protocol, is a signaling protocol for the purpose of Internet Telephony. However, the security issue to authenticate the end user is not well solved in the formal RFC document of SIP. Furthermore, few SIP implementations can he deployed across platform nowadays. The goal of this thesis was to design and implement SIP elements, supporting image-based authentication and the ability of easy deployment and across-platform. It is based on a JAVA technology, called JAIN-SIP. In addition to the basic session operations, Instant Messaging was taken as a demonstration service in the program. The outcome of the implementation and relevant implications were analyzed. Tests and evaluation focused on the requirements that are expected to be fulfilled. Further discussion extended to other SIP related services and functions for future work.en
