Abstract

Arbetet undersöker debatten kring det byggnadshistoriska värdet i Finland. Debatten innefattar axplock ur den historiska debatten kring sekelskiftet ända till modern tid, med fokus på den aktuella mediedebatten. Eftersom ämnet kan anses vara mycket subjektivt, eller filosofiskt, har jag valt att sätta mycket vikt vid tidningsartiklar, för att kunna skapa en bild av den allmänna uppfattningen av det byggnadshistoriska värdet. Debatten visar på att samma sorts argument, liksom dilemman, kan hittas också inom både de historiska och moderna mediediskussionerna. Som analys av debatten har jag försökt kategorisera värdegrunderna som tillsammans bildar det byggnadshistoriska värdet. Delfaktorerna Autenticitet, Estetik och Ekonomi bildar även kombinationsfaktorer som kontext, helhet och funktion för den historiska byggnaden eller miljön. På basen av dessa delfaktorer analyserar arbetet vilka sorters resultat olika värdeprioriteringar ger när man handskas med historisk arkitektur. Sammanfattningsvis kan man konstatera att trots att man i Finland värnar om historisk arkitektur, är bevarandet av äldre byggnadsmassa inte tillräckligt systematiskt. Genom att analysera värdegrunderna mera objektivt, kunde man få en större förståelse för hur olika prioriteringar påverkar den historiska byggnaden. Objektiviteten skulle göra byggnadsskyddet mera jämlikt, och man skulle ha en större grund att stå på när man gör beslut. Vidare diskuterar jag även hur den ekonomiska prioriteringen inom samhället i allmänhet har en stor inverkan på bevarandet av historiska byggnader.

The work examines the debate surrounding the value of built heritage in Finland. The debate encompasses selected discussions out of the historical debate from the turn of the century until modern day, with focus on the current media discourse. Because the subject can be viewed as very subjective, or philosophical, I have chosen to emphasize newspaper articles as to be able to paint a picture of the zeitgeist concerning the value of built heritage. The debate shows that arguments, as well as problems, similar to historic discourse can also be found in modern media discussions. As an analytical backdrop I have tried to categorize the foundational values that together form the value of built heritage. The subfactors authenticity, aesthetics and economy also form combinational factors such as context, entirety and functions for the historical building or environment. Based on these subfactors the work analyses which sorts of results different value prioritisations give when you work with historical architecture. In summary one can conclude that even though Finland cherishes historical architecture the preservation of older buildings is not systematic enough. Through analysis of the foundational values more objectively one could gain a greater understanding for how different prioritisations affects the historical building. Objectivity would make the protection of built heritage more equal and give decisionmakers a firmer foundation on which to base decisions. Furthermore, I also discuss how the economical prioritisation in society generally has a large effect on the preservation of historical buildings.
