Abstract

Aalto University (Finland) has its own Learning Management System called My- Courses which is based upon Moodle. The user experience for students is not optimal and in this thesis I research how it can be improved with a focus on the dashboard. The main goals are to understand where the pain points originate from and evaluate the usefulness of customizability for students. The original hypothesis is that allowing end-users to customize would enable them to tailor their dashboard according to their needs. In order to validate the assumption, a quantitative research has been done with 580 answers from students with different backgrounds as well as interviews where I discussed further what the root causes of the sub-optimal user experience are on the dashboard and what are their needs for the calendar. From those data, it turns out students are not looking for customizability but prefer a simpler and cleaner dashboard by default where all the unneeded visual noise would be removed from. Then, I have implemented a proof-of-concept where the calendar is revamped as well as the recently accessed courses block. The usefulness of the solution is discussed as well as future possible developments for MyCourses.

Aalto-yliopistolla (Suomi) on oma Moodle-pohjainen oppimishallintajärjestelmä My-Courses. Opiskelijoiden käyttökokemus ei ole optimaalinen, ja tutkin tässä opinnäytetyössä, miten sitä voidaan parantaa keskittymällä järjestelmän etusivuun. Päätavoitteena on ymmärtää, mistä ongelmat ovat peräisin, ja arvioida etusivun muokattavuuden hyödyllisyyttä opiskelijoille. Alkuperäinen hypoteesi on, että kun loppukäyttäjät voivat muokata etusivua, he voivat räätälöidä sivun tarpeidensa mukaan. Oletuksen testaamiseksi on tehty kvantitatiivinen tutkimus, jossa analysointiin 580 vastausta eri taustoilta olevilta opiskelijoilta, sekä haastatteluja, joissa keskustelin edelleen siitä, mitkä ovat huonomman käyttökokemuksen perimmäiset syyt ja mitä he tarvitsevat kalenterissa. Näistä tiedoista käy ilmi, että opiskelijat eivät etsi mukautettavuutta, vaan haluavat oletuksena yksinkertaisemman ja puhtaamman etusivun, josta kaikki tarpeeton visuaalinen kohina poistetaan. Työssä olen toteuttanut konseptitoteutuksen, jossa uudistetaan sekä kalenteri että äskettäin käytettyjen kurssien luettelo. Analysoin ratkaisun hyödyllisyyttä sekä pohdin MyCoursesin tulevaa mahdollista kehitystä.
