Abstract
Before the financial crisis, private equity (PE) was characterized by shorter, more aggressive investment cycles. This thesis, analyzing 9,065 European PE deals from 2000 to 2022, reveals a notable shift, with average holding periods extending from 4.8 to 5.9 years in the post-crisis era. The study employs regression and Cox proportional hazards models to assess how operational performance and market conditions influence exit strategies. Utilizing robust matching approaches to control for potential hidden biases, the findings suggest a strategic adaptation within the PE industry. My findings highlight the need for further research on how we can better understand and estimate PE firms’ strategies in relevance to holding periods.
