Abstract

The title of the thesis is Arctic offshore wind farms’ development challenges and profitability. This thesis consists of two parts which are divided between the development challenges identification and discussion and the profitability analysis. Chapter 2 consists of the identification and discussion of the development challenges. It is a literature review based on existing research and publications. In chapters 3 and 4 the methodology and the results of the profitability analysis are presented. In the analysis three different profitability scenarios were calculated based on existing data on electricity prices and LCOE values. There were many findings on the literature review part of the development challenges. Biggest themes were the legislation and the lack of it on EEZ, technology and its commercial development for arctic conditions, electricity transmission issues and combining large offshore wind farm areas with marine flora and fauna. What makes this rather difficult is the combining of all of these in order to create a feasible project. In the profitability analysis the results show that there is enormous potential for large profits if the electricity selling price is high enough and the LCOE value does not rise too high due to for example harsh arctic conditions. On the other hand, the projects may also cause large losses in worst cases.

Diplomityön otsikko on "Arktisten merituulipuistojen kehityshaasteet ja kannattavuus". Tämä diplomityö koostuu kahdesta osasta, jotka on jaettu kehityshaasteiden tunnistamisen ja vertailun sekä kannattavuusanalyysin kesken. Luku 2 koostuu kehityshaasteiden tunnistamisesta ja analysoinnista. Se perustuu olemassa olevaan tutkimukseen ja julkaisuihin. Luvuissa 3 ja 4 esitellään kannattavuusanalyysin menetelmä ja tulokset. Analyysissa laskettiin kolme erilaista kannattavuusskenaariota olemassa olevien sähkönhintatietojen ja LCOE-arvojen perusteella. Kehityshaasteiden kirjallisuuskatsauksen osalta löydettiin paljon tuloksia. Suurimmat teemat olivat lainsäädäntö ja sen puute talousvyöhykkeellä (EEZ), tekniikka ja sen kaupallinen kehitys arktisiin olosuhteisiin, sähkönsiirto-ongelmat sekä suurten merituulipuistoalueiden yhdistäminen merelliseen kasvillisuuteen ja eläimistöön. Tämän hankalaksi tekee kaikkien näiden asioiden yhdistäminen kannattavan hankkeen luomiseksi. Kannattavuusanalyysin tulokset osoittavat, että suuret voitot ovat mahdollisia, jos sähkön myyntihinta on tarpeeksi korkea ja LCOE-arvo ei nouse liian korkeaksi esimerkiksi ankarien arktisten olosuhteiden vuoksi. Toisaalta projektit voivat myös aiheuttaa suuria tappioita pahimmassa tapauksessa.
