Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to pinpoint the different ways social media can be utilized in the management of crises. As a literature review, the thesis discusses different articles surrounding topics such as public relations, communication strategies, social media, and the Situational Crisis Communication Theory. The main findings of this thesis include the existence of a lifecycle for both crises and crisis management, as well as the importance of PR professionals staying up to date on current communication methods in order to overcome online crises. Different techniques regarding social media interactions are discussed. The findings suggest that the field of PR would benefit from the revision of the Situational Crisis Communication Theory to include all aspects of social media.
