Abstract

Mobility is one of the key motivations to deploy IEEES02.11 wireless LAN (WLAN). However, mobility is also a challenge for WLAN. Some protocols have been standardized or proposed to address mobility in WLAN. Inter Access Point Protocol (lAPP) is proposed to facilitate the link-layer mobility while Mobile IP (Internet Protocol) is intended to solve the mobility problem in the network-layer if a mobile user has roamed into a different IP subnet. However, the base Mobile IP protocols do not provide sufficient mobility support to achieve seamless handover, especially for real-time services such as Voice over IP (VoIP). This thesis presents an in-depth study of the enhancements to the base Mobile IP protocols, and categorizes them. A new protocol is also proposed in this thesis, which simplifies the handover procedure in base Mobile IP without modifying the MN (mobile node).
