Enhancing nitrogen removal from cold wastewater; A pilot study of an integrated fixed film activated sludge treatment process

Abstract

This thesis was conducted as a part of the “Water skills growth and internationalization” program. In this thesis a pilot for nitrogen removal in cold waters is studied. The pilot combines activated sludge (AS) with carrier technology. Nitrogen is an important nutrient, but excessive emissions can cause eutrophication. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce nitrogen emissions. The AS process nitrogen removal efficiency suffers in cold temperatures, but new technologies have been developed, such as the integrated fixed film activated sludge (IFAS) process used in the pilot. In lab scale pilots and wastewater treatment plants found in literature, the ammonia removal rates (NRR) of carriers was ~0.1-0.3 kg/m3/d, with one WWTP reaching 1.1 kg/m3/d. Piloting took place at Vihti WWTP, where a cost-efficient method to increase nitrogen removal is needed to comply with future regulations. Due to problems with pilot operation, the process was divided into phases. In the 1 st phase NRR was great at 0.71 kg/m3/d on average. In the 2nd phase, the fillrate was increased to the max. of 50 % but NRR decreased. Therefore, the carriers were re-inoculated. NRR of carriers in the 3rd phase was 0.24 kg/m3/d. The denitrification rate in the 3rd phase was ~30 %. In the last phase temperatures rose but the NRR did not increase, indicating that some factor limited nitrification. One factor was the improper storage of carriers. Also, oxygen was low on occasion and there was a lack of phosphorus. The pilot achieved better nitrogen removal rates than the Vihti AS system. Compared to other cases, performance was average. However, total nitrogen removal was not adequate to comply with the future regulations, so retrofitting of the carriers is not an option without considerably increasing tank volume. This thesis provides valuable insight into the IFAS process, which is not yet widely used in Finland. The pilot proves that an IFAS process is able to remove nitrogen in cold temperatures. Further research of the limiting factors and the impact of fillrate is recommended. By utilizing the results and findings of this thesis, the efficiency of the process can be improved.

Diplomityö on osa "Vesiosaamisen kasvu- ja kansainvälistymis” -ohjelmaa. Työ keskittyy typenpoiston pilotointiin kylmissä vesissä, missä yhdistetään aktiivilieteprosessi kantoaineteknologian kanssa. Typpi on tärkeä ravintoaine, mutta liialliset typpipäästöt voivat aiheuttaa mm. rehevöitymistä. Siksi päästöjä on vähennettävä. Aktiivilietteen typenpoistoteho laskee kylmissä lämpötiloissa. Uusia teknologioita typenpoistoon on kehitetty, kuten pilotissa käytetty integrated fixed film activated sludge -prosessi (IFAS). Kirjallisuudesta löydetyissä piloteissa ja jätevedenpuhdistamoissa (JVP) ammoniakin poistoaste (ammonia removal rate, NRR) kantoainekappalekuutiota kohden oli ~0,1–0,3 kg/m3/d erään JVP:n yltäessä 1,1 kg/m3/d tehoon. Pilotointi tapahtui Vihdin jätevedenpuhdistamolla, missä tarvitaan typenpoistoon kustannustehokas menetelmä tulevien rajoitusten noudattamiseksi. Pilotin operointiongelmien takia prosessi jaettiin vaiheisiin. 1. vaiheen NRR oli hyvä, keskimäärin NRR oli 0,71 kg/m3/d. 2. vaiheessa täyttöaste nostettiin maksimiarvoon 50 %, mutta pilotin NRR laski. Tästä syystä kantoainekappaleet ympättiin uudelleen. NRR 3. vaiheessa oli 0,24 kg/m3/d. Denitrifikaatioaste 3. vaiheessa oli ~30 %. Viimeisessä vaiheessa lämpötilat nousivat, mutta NRR ei noussut. Tämä osoittaa, että jokin rajoitti nitrifikaatiota. Yksi rajoittava tekijä oli kantoainekappaleiden puutteellinen varastointi. Lisäksi happipitoisuus sekä fosforin määrä olivat alhaiset. Pilotti saavutti paremman typenpoistoasteen kuin Vihdin JVP. Muihin vertailukohteisiin nähden pilotin suorituskyky oli keskinkertainen. Kokonaistypenpoisto ei kuitenkaan riittänyt tulevien rajoitusten noudattamiseen, joten kantoainekappaleiden jälkiasennus Vihdin puhdistamolle ei ole vaihtoehto ilman allastilavuuden huomattavaa lisäämistä. Tämä diplomityö tuo esiin arvokasta tietoa IFAS-prosessista, joka ei vielä ole Suomessa laajalti käytössä. Pilotti osoitti, että IFAS-prosessi kykenee poistamaan typpeä kylmissä lämpötiloissa. Rajoittavien tekijöiden ja täyttöasteen vaikutuksen jatkotutkimus on suositeltavaa. Tämän työn tuloksia ja havaintoja hyödyntämällä prosessin tehokkuutta voidaan kehittää edelleen.
