Abstract
This thesis explores the adoption of 3D model-based design approval using OCX format in the basic hull design phase with the goal to determine the benefits and risks involved, as well as the challenges of the adoption of the proposed method. The long-standing industry standards of traditional 2D drawing-based approval processes are rapidly being replaced with a new set of digital design tools and data exchange formats that offer the potential of more efficient and transparent workflows.
The study rely on the practical observations of the work in the shipyard, internal analysis of the approval process of the design, and the survey conducted among the professionals involved in the model-based workflows. The effects of the 3D model-based approval were compared to the traditional methods using key performance indicators.
The outcomes are highly beneficial as it is demonstrated by better communication between stakeholders, less rework and revision time, earlier engagement of classification societies and a whole reduction in time of the design approval process. Nevertheless, there are also some risks and challenges which include intellectual property issues, lack of developed tools, change resistance, and the necessity of qualified resources and better documentation.
Even though the use of 3D model-based approval is at an early stage, the benefits noted are evidently more than the existing risks and challenges. Full transition to 3D is still not possible yet a hybrid model of the two methods taking place simultaneously is advisable as an transitional step.
