Abstract
In today’s rapidly evolving and competitive business landscape, marketers continually seek relevant marketing approaches to keep consumers engaged. Among experiential marketing strategies that prioritize creating emotionally compelling and holistic experiences, nostalgia marketing has garnered significant attention and widespread application in recent years. Nostalgia marketing has been highlighted as an effective strategy for enhancing emotional connections among consumers, tying to rose-tinted memories of the past. Exploring the sensory and emotional dimensions of nostalgia marketing is pivotal in understanding its impact. The aim of this thesis is to examine the emotional effects of nostalgia-driven marketing through a literature review. An exploration of two distinct modes of nostalgia–personal and vicarious–will be conducted to further emphasize the value created both for brands and consumers. The findings underline how brands leverage nostalgia to evoke emotional responses, creating meaningful engagement across diverse audiences. Nostalgic appeals peak in relevance particularly during times of turbulence and uncertainty, connecting consumers with the familiarity and comfort of the past. Case examples, such as Barbie by Mattel, illustrate the impact of nostalgia marketing in creating valuable consumer-brand relationships. Finally, this study offers practical applications for marketing managers looking to utilize nostalgia marketing, while acknowledging limitations in existing research, especially in the context of cross-cultural and industry-specific perspectives.Description
