Abstract

Utilizing the supplied fuel energy more efficiently onboard cruise ships is getting more challenging. Four-stroke medium speed engines can use roughly a bit under half of the supplied energy, while a large portion is given off as waste heat. Aiming for higher energy efficiency is therefore not limited to the actual engine power output, as a significant amount of exergy exists after the combustion process. Many solutions already exploit the waste heat energy by producing electricity. Onboard a cruise ship there are several heat consumers that utilize the waste heat in the form of steam and water, which the ship power plant already produces. It is therefore of importance to know where, and to what ratio the allocation of waste heat is done most efficiently. The aim of this thesis was to develop a tool that showed the user a way of how to exploit the most economic use of the produced thermal energy onboard, by calculating different fuel consumptions for various waste heat technologies. The tool was implemented with simple user input files, where the user entered the operating profile of the ship, itinerary, ambient conditions, energy inputs and which equipment utilized heat. Calculations were done internally with the aid of the programming language Python. The tool calculated how the waste heat recovery technologies that used waste heat for power or heat production reduced the hotel load or increased the electrical power production. It was then possible to determine which combination of technologies that achieved the lowest fuel consumption at the intended itinerary of the ship. Other questions that the thesis aimed to answer where when it was advanta-geous to use waste heat for electricity generation, and when waste heat was to be used in other processes. The tool can be applied to concepts and existing ships in service. The user can choose between ready-made presets for quick simulation or advanced options for performing in-depth analyses. A case study of an existing ship in operation was made by first simulating the operation of the ship with different freshwater production plants in use, without waste heat recovery technologies installed. A second simulation was performed with different combinations of waste heat recovery technologies. The result showed that for an operating profile of lower speeds in a warmer area, absorption chillers yield the highest annual savings, as well as the shortest payback time.

Att utnyttja den med bränslet tillförda energin mer effektivt ombord på kryssningsfartyg blir mer och mer utmanande. Fyrtakts medelvarvsmotorer kan använda ungefär hälften av den tillförda energin, medan en stor del avges som spillvärme. Att försöka uppnå högre effektivitet begränsas därför inte av motorns faktiska uteffekt, eftersom en betydande del exergi finns kvar efter förbränningsprocessen. Många lösningar utnyttjar redan energin i spillvärmen genom att producera elenergi. Ombord på ett kryssningsfartyg finns också flera värmekonsumenter som utnyttjar spillvärmen i form av ånga och vatten, som fartygets kraftverk redan producerar. Det är därför av vikt att veta var och till vilket förhållande allokeringen av spillvärme görs mest effektivt. Målet med denna avhandling var att utveckla ett verktyg som visade användaren hur den kunde utnyttja den termiska energin på det mest ekonomiska sättet om-bord, genom att beräkna olika bränslekonsumtioner för olika spillvärmeteknologier. Verktyget blev implementerat med enkla användarinmatningsfiler där som användaren matade in fartygets användningsprofil, rutt, omgivningsförhållanden, inkommande energi samt vilken utrustning som utnyttjade spillvärme. Beräkningarna gjordes internt med hjälp av programmeringsspråket Python. Verktyget beräknade hur värmeåtervinningsteknologier som använde spillvärme för att producera energi eller värme minskade hotellbelastningen eller ökade elenergiproduktionen. Efter denna beräkning var det möjligt att bestämma vilken teknologikombination som erhöll den lägsta bränslekonsumtionen på den för fartyget avsedda rutten. Andra frågor som avhandlingen försökte besvara var när det är fördelaktigt att använda spillvärme för elproduktion, och när spillvärmen skulle användas i andra processer. Verktyget kan appliceras till koncept eller existerande fartyg i drift. Användaren kan välja mellan färdiga inställningar för snabbare simulering eller avancerade alternativ för att utföra djupgående analyser. En fallstudie för ett existerande fartyg i drift gjordes medelst att först simulera fartygets bruk med olika färskvattensproduktionsanläggningar i användning, utan värmeåtervinningsteknologier installerade. En andra simulering gjordes med olika kombinationer av värmeåtervinningsteknologier. Resultaten visar att för en driftsprofil med lägre hastigheter i ett varmare område så genererade absorptionskylare de högsta årliga inbesparingarna, och hade även de kortaste återbetalningstiderna.
