Abstract
This thesis investigates the intersection of personal memory, cultural identity, and global influences within the context of contemporary fashion design. By integrating autoethnographic methods with material exploration, the research delves into how individual and collective narratives can be expressed through fashion. The study emphasizes the role of memory and heritage in shaping design processes, highlighting the interplay between tradition and innovation.
Through theoretical analysis and practical application, the research explores the transformation of deeply personal experiences into a cohesive fashion collection. Key methods include iterative design, object-based research, and material experimentation, focusing on ripstop fabric and knitwear. These materials were chosen for their symbolic and functional properties, reflecting themes of resilience and fragility central to the work.
The resulting collection features five ensembles that merge technical innovation with narrative-driven design. Each piece embodies the dualities of nostalgia and modernity, showcasing how traditional motifs can be reimagined for contemporary contexts. The collection also demonstrates the potential of fashion as a medium for storytelling, fostering connections between personal histories and broader cultural themes.
This thesis contributes to the discourse on identity in fashion, proposing a framework for integrating personal and cultural narratives into design. It highlights the transformative power of fashion as a conduit for expressing complex identities and as a tool for cultural dialogue in a globalized world.
