Abstract
Tämä maisterin opinnäyte muodostuu taiteellisesta työstä, joka sisältää produktio-osan ja kirjallisen osan. Produktio-osa on lavastus, puku- ja videosuunnittelu Aina Bergrothin kirjoittamaan, Aino-Kaisa Saarista käsittelevään Tahto -näytelmään. Esitys sai ensi-iltansa 24.1. Helsingin Kaupunginteatterin pienellä näyttämöllä.
Lavastus-, puku,- ja videosuunnittelutyön tärkeimpänä lähdemateriaalina olivat Tahto -näytelmän käsikirjoituksen useat eri versiot, ja kohtaamiset sekä näytelmään kirjoitetun, kuvitteellisen, että oikean Aino-Kaisa Saarisen kanssa. Suunnittelutyön taustalla oli ensin halu ymmärtää päähenkilöä ja myöhemmin pyrkimys samaistua hänen maailmaansa, tarinaansa ja tunteisiinsa.
Taiteellisen opinnäytteen kirjallisen osan lähtökohtana oli havainto esityksen päähenkilön hiihtäjä Aino-Kaisan työn, ja lavastajan työn eroavaisuuksista ja samankaltaisuuksista. Opinnäytteen kirjallinen osa on kirjoitettu näytelmän muotoon, ja sen tärkeimpänä lähdemateriaalina oli produktio-osa ja sensuunnitteluprosessi.
Työ on moniulotteinen ja sen voi lukea fiktiivisenä ja taiteellisena kokonaisuutena tai tutkimuksena, joka ehdottaa näytelmän kirjoittamista itsereflektion työvälineeksi. Näytelmä on valikoitunut opinnäytteen kirjallisen osan muodoksi, sillä se on lavastuksen opintojen aikana tutuimmaksi muodostunut tekstilaji. Taiteellisen opinnäytteen kirjallinen osa, Tahto -esikoisnäytelmä kantaesityksen suunnittelusta jakautuu yhteentoista kohtaukseen, jotka käsittelevät ja kuvaavat esityksen suunnittelun eri vaiheita teoksen protagonistin eli lavastajan näkökulmasta. Se perustelee näytelmän visuaalisia valintoja ja avaa niiden taustalla ollutta suunnitteluprosessia.
Tahto -esikoisnäytelmä kantaesityksen suunnittelusta on ajankuva lavastaja-pukusuunnittelijan pirstaleisesta työnluonteesta. Se on kuvaus ja käsittely työn ja perheen yhteensovittamisen haasteista, paineen- ja stressinsietokyvystä, luovuudesta, intohimosta ja kunnianhimosta. Se kuvaa sitä kuinka intensiivisen suunnittelu- ja treenijakson aikana esityksen todellisuus voi sekoittua omaan arkitodellisuuteemme, ja kuinka fiktio voi alkaa vaikuttaa elämäämme.
Taiteellisen lopputyön kirjallisen osan käsikirjoituksesta on tietoisesti jätetty kuvitus pois, jotta se jättäisi tilaa lukijan mielikuvitukselle. Opinnäytteen kokonaisuuteen kuuluu käsiohjelma, joka sisältää kuvia esityksen suunnitteluvaiheesta ja valmiista teoksesta. Käsiohjelmasta löytyy myös lavastajan sana, jossa perustellaan esikoisnäytelmän kirjoittamiseen liittyviä valintoja ja pohditaan kantaesityksen suunnitteluun liittyviä erityispiirteitä.
This artistic master’s thesis consists of a production component and a written component. The production component is a stage, costume, and video design for Tahto, a play about a cross-country skier Aino-Kaisa Saarinen, written by Aina Bergroth. The premiere was on the 24th of January 2019 at Helsinki City theater’s small stage.
The most important sources for the design practice were the numerous versions of the Tahto script, and encounters with both the fictitious, written play character Aino-Kaisa and the real-life one. The aim at the beginning of the design process was to gain a deeper understanding of the world, story and emotions of Saarinen. The starting point of the design work were observations of the differences and similarities between the professions of a scenographer and a professional athlete.
The written component of the thesis is written in the form of play, and it’s most important sources are the production component itself and it’s design process.
As a multidimensional thesis, it can be interpreted as a fictitious and artistic whole, or as a study that suggests playwriting as a tool for self-reflection. Writing the written component in the form of a play was chosen because plays in general were the most studied genre of text during the scenography studies.
The written component of the artistic thesis, the play, called ”Tahto -esikoisnäytelmä kantaesityksen suunnittelusta” (freely translated as: volition -the authors first play, written about designing a new play ) is divided into eleven scenes. It describes and deals with the different phases of the design process from the point of view of the protagonist, the scenographer. It justifies the the visual choices made for the production part, the Tahto play at Helsinki City theatre.
Tahto -esikoisnäytelmä kantaesityksen suunnittelusta paints a picture of our time, and about the shattered nature of the profession of a scenographer. It describes and deals with matters concerning the challenges of balancing family life and work, stress and time management, creativity, passion and ambition towards work. The thesis studies how the reality of a play can start to interfere with our ordinary life during an intensive design and training phase, and how fiction can start to effect our lives.
The written component of the thesis has not been illustrated, leaving space for the readers imagination. Attached is a program leaflet, that contains pictures from the design process and of the ready play. There is also a small introduction written by the author, in which she ponders the characteristics of designing a new play compared to a classic play.
