Abstract
This thesis investigates graphene-based field-effect transistors (GFETs) for biosensing applications. Graphene, a 2D material with high carrier mobility and chemical inertness, holds promise for detecting biomolecules at very low concentrations.
GFETs are fabricated via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to grow graphene on copper substrates. Graphene is then transferred to the substrate using a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) layer. The fabrication of GFETs is comprised of gate fabrication, contact fabrication, graphene deposition, and encapsulation of the modules. Special attention is given to the graphene-metal contacts and their optimization. Different plasma etching recipes are explored for the selective removal of film residues, and methods for characterizing the efficiency of the etching process are presented.
To assess the quality and performance of the GFETs, several characterization methods are employed including Raman spectroscopy, which identifies vibrational modes and assesses the quality of graphene by analyzing the characteristic spectra corresponding to specific phonon modes. The intensity ratios of the D, G, and 2D-peaks provide insights into defects and strain within the graphene lattice.
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) maps the surface topography to evaluate roughness and detect contaminants like PMMA residue. Surface roughness directly affects the electrical properties by inducing strain in the graphene layer and modifying current injection into the graphene channel.
Electrical measurements via four-point probing and the TLM yield sheet resistance, carrier mobility, and contact resistance-parameters essential for optimizing GFET performance.
Improvements in contact fabrication, particularly with respect to contact formation in the graphene-metal interface, lead to enhanced device performance. By addressing these key challenges, the thesis advances the integration of graphene-based transistors into biosensing platforms. The improved fabrication and characterization techniques contribute to the development of highly sensitive, scalable, and low-power biosensors. These advancements pave the way for the broader adoption of 2D materials in industrial applications, offering significant benefits in terms of device miniaturization and performance.
Tämä työ käsittelee grafeenipohjaisia kenttävaikutustransistoreja (GFET) biosensorisovelluksia varten. Grafeeni on kaksiulotteinen kemiallisesti stabiili materiaali, jolla on korkea varauksenkuljettajien liikkuvuus, joten se soveltuu biomolekyylien havaitsemiseen hyvin pienillä pitoisuuksilla.
GFET:it valmistetaan kemiallisella höyrypinnoituksella (CVD), jossa grafeeni kasvatetaan kuparisubstraateille.
Grafeeni-metalli-rajapinnan optimointi, johtaa parempaan komponenttien suorituskykyyn. Tarkastelemalla näitä keskeisiä haasteita tämä tutkielma edistää grafeenipohjaisten biosensoreiden valmistusta. Parannetut valmistus- ja karakterisointitekniikat edesauttavat erittäin herkkien, skaalautuvien ja pienitehoisten biosensorien kehitystä. Nämä edistysaskeleet edistävät kaksiulotteisten materiaalien laajempaa käyttöä teollisissa sovelluksissa, tarjoten merkittäviä etuja komponenttien pienentämisen ja suorituskyvyn suhteen.
