Abstract
This thesis explores how foreign-born physicians integrate into the Finnish healthcare system, with a particular focus on the barriers they face and the factors influencing their long-term retention. Drawing on qualitative interviews with eight foreign-born doctors, the study identifies key challenges such as the licensing process, language adaptation, limited institutional support, and issues of perceived discrimination. At the same time, strong team support and a reinforced sense of professional identity were found to play a meaningful role in improving job satisfaction and retention. The findings point to a clear need for more structured institutional guidance to strengthen the integration experience and ensure the long-term retention of the foreign-born physicians.
