Abstract

Remote road weather measurement devices estimate the amount of water, ice, and snow on road surfaces based on their optical properties. Comparison of the relative attenuation of light as it is reflected off a road surface at multiple wavelengths makes it possible to determine the shares and layer thicknesses of the different forms of water on the road. In this thesis, we develop a method for creating remote road weather measurement algorithms for devices using different sets of optical components using the Monte Carlo method. This is accomplished by creating a detailed simulation model that captures the physical phenomena present in the measurement process. We compare the performances of algorithms between simulated devices with pairs and triplets of either LED or laser components. Our simulation-based analysis indicates a significantly lower capability for both two-component devices to estimate the relative shares of water and ice in their mixed layers. We also find that the laser-based algorithms provide generally slightly more accurate results in both layer thickness and layer composition estimation.

Tiesään etämittaukseen kehitetyt laitteet arvioivat tiellä olevan veden, jään ja lumen kerrospaksuudet niiden optisten ominaisuuksien avulla. Tämä tapahtuu vertailemalla absorptiosta johtuvaa tien pinnasta heijastetun valon intensiteetin vaimenemista eri aallonpituuksilla. Tässä diplomityössä kehitämme Monte Carlo -simulaation avulla menetelmän algoritmien luomiseksi eri optisia komponentteja hyödyntäville tiesään etämittauslaitteille. Luomme tätä prosessia varten simulaatiomallin, joka mallintaa mittausprosessissa esiintyvät fysikaaliset ilmiöt. Vertaamme sekä kahteen että kolmeen laseriin ja LEDiin pohjautuvan algoritmin suorituskykyä. Simulaatioon pohjautuva analyysimme osoittaa, että kahteen komponenttiin perustuvat algoritmit erottavat merkittävästi heikommin veden ja jään osuuden niistä koostuvista sekakerroksista. Lisäksi analyysimme osoittaa, että lasereita käyttävät algoritmit pystyvät arvioimaan sekä kerrospaksuudet että veden, jään ja lumen pitoisuudet hieman LEDeihin pohjautuvia algoritmeja tarkemmin.
