Abstract

In recent years, quantum computers have received much of attention due to their potential to significantly increase the computation speed compared to classical computers. Unlike classical computers, quantum computers operate with quantum bits which currently operate at extremely low temperatures. The quantum bits are currently wired for interfacing electronics operating at room temperature. This results to bottleneck in the scaling of quantum computers since large scale quantum computers would require thousands of wires. A possible solution to solve this problem is to bring the interfacing and control electronics to cryogenic temperatures. A Low power Successive Approximation Register Analog-to-Digital Converter (SAR ADC) for cryogenic environments was designed in this thesis. In order to achieve low power consumption, the designed ADC was optimized for low sampling rates. Additionally, the accuracy and performance of the device models were evaluated at low temperatures. Furthermore the operation of the cryogenic SAR ADC was evaluated at 4 Kelvin temperature by extrapolating the temperature sweep simulation data. To speed up the design process, TheSydeKick and Berkeley Analog Generator was utilized in this thesis. TheSydeKick testbenches was implemented for extracting the performance metrics of the cryogenic SAR ADC. The the aim of utilizing schematic and layout generators was to accelerate the iteration and design of the layouts.

Viime vuosina kvanttitietokoneet ovat keränneet paljon huomiota. Niiden ajatellaan lisäävän huomattavasti laskentatehoa nykyisiin Von Neuman rakenteeseen perustuviin tietokoneisiin verrattuna. Toisin kuin nykyiset tietokoneet, kvanttitietokoneet hyödyntävät kvanttibittejä (kubitteja), jotka toistaiseksi toimivat erittäin matalissa lämpötiloissa. Nykyisissä kvanttitietokoneissa kvanttibitit luetaan huoneenlämpötilassa toimivan liityntäelektroniikan avulla. Tämä rakenne rajoittaa kvanttitietokoneiden toimintaa niiden koon kasvaessa, sillä suuret kvanttitietokoneet tarvitsevat suuren määrän liityntäjohtoja toimintansa ohjaamiseen ja tiedon siirtämiseen. Mahdollinen ratkaisu johdotuksen aiheuttaman rajoitteen poistamiseksi on toteuttaa liitäntä- ja ohjauseletroniikka kryogeenisessa ympäristössä lähellä kvanttibittejä. Tässä opinnäytetyössä on suunniteltu matalatehoinen peräkkäin approksimoiva analogia-digitaalimuunnin kryogeeniseen toimintaympäristöön. Matalan tehonkulutuksen saavuttamiseksi suunniteltu analogia-digitaalimuunnin optimoitiin matalalle näytteistystaajuudelle. TheSydeKick-ympäristön käytön tavoitteena on tehdä suorituskyvyn määrittely ohjelmallisia testipenkkejä hydyntäen. Berkeley Analog Generator-menetelmän hyödyntämisen tavoitteena on nopeuttaa piirien suunnittelua ja piiriparametrien etsimistä.
