Abstract
5G is considered as a revolutionary technology that enables a wide number of use cases such as Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC) and Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC). Additionally, in 5G, venue owners and other stakeholders can operate local mobile networks and offer venue specific connectivity services over locally issued spectrum licenses. The high-frequency Millimeter Wave spectrum bands in 5G are suited for indoor network operations, and to overcome the short signal reach of mmWave signals, MNOs need to set up small cell networks inside the venue premises. Therefore, with the emergence of local operator networks, and the incumbent MNOs, it is important to understand the future indoor connectivity options in a venue such as University campus. In this regard, the thesis builds possible future scenarios defining the future indoor connectivity options using the scenario planning method, and value network configurations are built to identify different local network deployment options, each of which will be driven by a dominant actor/actors. The future scenarios and value network configurations are constructed based on literature review, and discussions with techno-economic and industry experts. Aalto University campus network is used as a case study in the thesis. Total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis is performed to estimate the costs involved in rolling out local 5G networks, and these costs are compared with the existing Wi-Fi networks on the campus. Migration strategies are proposed for the University in adopting 5G technology from the existing technology. The possible future scenarios, value network configurations and TCO analysis will help University to make a decision on whether to obtain a local spectrum license and set up a local 5G network or continue with the Wi-Fi technology and buy 5G services from MNOs.
