Mergers and acquisitions in emerging Europe 2019-2023

Abstract

Mergers and acquisitions in Europe experienced their highest recorded total and average deal values and volumes in the years surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study takes a look at the M&A landscape of emerging Europe between the years 2019-2023, starting from the height of activity at the beginning of the pandemic to the end of last year. We characterize the overarching trends and patterns of the emerging European economies and the industries within them, also diving into the deal characteristics. The results of this study suggest that the M&A landscape of emerging Europe is very diverse with some more developed economies rising up as leaders, and others lagging behind. The restate, financials, and technology industries rose up as activity hubs, accounting for the largest deal value and volume. The deal attitude, and payment type showed clear characteristics familiar to the European M&A landscape, but relative home market importance suggested an opposite trend to what the European economic integration suggests. The studied trends and patterns showed characteristics familiar to the European, and the emerging European, as well as indications of the economic turmoil experienced during the pandemic.

Euroopan yritysosto ja -fuusio markkinat kokivat korkeimmat kirjatut kokonais- ja kesimääräiset kauppojen arvot ja määrät COVID-19 pandemian ympärillä olevina vuosina.

Tämä tutkielma tarkastelee kasvavan Euroopan yritysosto ja -fuusion markkinoita vuosien 2019-2023 välillä, alkaen toiminnan huipusta pandemian alussa. Tutkielma keskittyy tunnistamaan trendejä ja vaihteluita eri maiden ja toimialojen välillä, sekä tunnistamaan kauppojen ominaisuuksia. Tutkielman tulokset viittaavat siihen, että kasvavan Euroopan yrityskauppa markkinat ovat hyvin monimuotoisia. Toisten kehittyneempien kansantalouksien yrityskaupat olivat sekä määrältään, että arvoltaan korkeampia kuin muissa aineiston maissa. Toimialojen suhteen kiinteistö, finanssi ja teknologia-alat nousivat toiminnan keskipisteiksi. Kauppa asenne, ja maksuväline osoittivat Euroopan markkinoille tyypillisiä piirteitä. Edellä mainittu, sekä muut aineistossa läpikäydyt yrityskauppojen ominaisuudet huomioon ottaen, tutkielma toteaa, ettei kasvavan Euroopan markkinoiden voida todeta noudattavan tehokkaiden markkinoiden hypoteesia. Tutkielmassa kuvatut trendit omaavat Eurooppalaisille yrityskauppa markkinoille, sekä vaikeille taloudellisille ajoille ominaisia piirteitä.
