Abstract

Kosketa minua – näe minut / Kosketuksesta ja sen merkityksistä keramiikan työprosessissa on taiteen maisterin opinnäyte, joka käsittelee kosketuksen merkitystä suhteessa kirjoittajan henkilökohtaiseen työskentelyyn ja taiteeseen yleisesti. Opinnäytteen keskiössä on produktio-osuus, joka tutkii kosketusta lämmitetyn keraamisen veistoksen kautta. Teos on suunniteltu kosketettavaksi. Opinnäyte pohtii kosketusta ja sen roolia reflektoiden lähdekirjallisuutta työpäiväkirjamerkintöihin, tekijälle ennalta poikkeaviin työskentely-metodeihin ja teoksen kokijoilta kerättyihin kokemuksiin.

Kosketuksella on oleellinen rooli jokapäiväisessä elämässä. Se auttaa hahmottamaan maailmaa ja siihen sijoittumista. Kosketus luo turvaa ja luottamusta sekä yhdistää. Kosketuksessa vastavuoroisuus on aina läsnä: kosketettaessa tulemme samalla kosketetuksi. Taiteen kontekstissa kosketuksen rooli on kuitenkin jossain määrin ristiriitainen. Taide koskettaa, mutta taidetta ei lähtökohtaisesti saa koskettaa. Tekijä on konkreettisesti tekemisissä materiaalinsa kanssa, mutta katsojalla ei tätä mahdollisuutta läheskään aina ole, sillä kaikki teokset eivät kestäisi jatkuvaa kosketusta.

Opinnäytteen produktio-osuudessa luotu teos pyrkii rikkomaan taiteen koskettamisen tabua ja tavoittelee teoksella läsnäolon ja pysähtymisen hetkeä. Työprosessissa perinteiset keramiikan menetelmät kietoutuvat yhteen uudemman teknologian kanssa. Prosessissa yhdistyvät 3D-skannaus, CNC-jyrsintä sekä perinteinen kipsimuotin teko ja posliinivalu. Näiden lisäksi lopullisessa teoksessa on lisäelementtinä lämpö. Ennalta tutuista tavoista poikkeavat metodit muuttavat työprosessia väistämättä ja kuljettavat uusien mahdollisuuksien ja tapojen äärelle. Kosketuksen rooli vaihtelee yhden tai useamman käsiparin ja koneiden välillä muodostaen lopputuloksen, jossa metodeita ei ole enää tarpeen erotella toistaan.

Prosessin lopputuloksena on moniaistisesti koettava veistos, joka haastaa katsojan aktiiviseen rooliin. Mahdollisuus teoksen koskettamiseen vastaa ihmisen sisäsyntyiseen haluun ymmärtää kosketuksen kautta. Kosketuksen kautta näyttelykontekstissa katsojan on helpompi lähestyä teosta ja sen tulkintaa omien kokemuksiensa pohjalta, jolloin myös teoksen merkitys vahvistuu. Kosketuksen vastavuoroinen rooli on oleellinen koko työprosessin ajan, aina idean syntymästä valmiin veistoksen koskettamiseen.

The Master of Arts Thesis Touch me – See me / About touch and its meanings in a ceramic work process researches meaning of touch in relation to writer’s personal work process and art in general. The core of the thesis is a production part, which researches touch through a warm ceramic sculpture that is meant to be touched. Thesis approaches touch and its role by reflecting reference literature to work diary, a changed approach in working methods and experiences collected from people who have been in touch with the sculpture.

Touch has an essential role in everyday life. It helps to perceive the world in relations to oneself. Touch creates safety and trust and helps creating connections. Touch is reciprocal: every time you touch, you are also touched. In the context of art, the role of touch is somewhat contradictory. Art touches, but usually art cannot be touched. The artist is physically in touch with their material, but the spectator has this opportunity only seldom as all the art works couldn’t survive repetitive touch.

The artwork created in the production part strives to break the taboo of not touching art. It also pursues to create the moment of stillness and being present. In the work process traditional ceramic methods are combined with newer technology. The work is created through 3D scanning, CNC milling, traditional plaster mold making and porcelain casting. In the addition, the final work also has the extra element of warmth. A changed approach with working methods changes the process inevitably and carries towards new possibilities and ways of working. The role of touch changes from one or more hand pairs and different machines creating an outcome where there is no longer a need to divide different methods from each other.

The result from the process is a multisensorial sculpture that encourages the viewer into active role. The possibility to touch the work responds to natural impulse to know through touch. Touch makes it is easier to approach the work and its interpretation through spectators’ own experiences leading to a point where the meaning of the work increases. The reciprocal role of touch is present throughout the whole process all the way starting from the initial idea ending to touching of the final piece.
