dc.description.abstract | Different types of wetlands have been used a long time in warm climates for treatment of water and have recently also seen more and more use in colder climates. Different methods, more or less natural, have been applied in different places depending on the desired function. This thesis has been compiled for Vaasan Vesi as an investigation if the area outside of Påttska wastewater treatment plant in Vaasa is suitable for such a system. The system will receive effluent from the treatment plant and should at the same time provide an opportunity for recreation. To examine this, principles regarding the design of such systems were compiled. Also, some theories regarding the design of parks were analysed as to offer a basis for the combining of the two. The natural systems that were analysed are surface runoff, slow and fast infiltration as well as the following types of wetlands; natural, constructed with free water surface (FWS) and constructed with subsurface flow (SSF). Principals for the design of these systems are presented and utilized in the choosing of a suitable system for Pattska wastewater treatment plant.
