Abstract

Fire protection systems employ sensors and valves in the piping network of the system. These components provide means for monitoring the status as well as controlling the release of the system. As such, they require a supporting control system that provide electrical power and interface, implement control logic, generate alarm and communicate with other systems. Marioff, a water mist fire protection system supplier, utilizes relay logic technology for use in the control system. Due to the nature of this technology, the design of the control system is project tailored (nonstandard) which affects the lead time for design and manufacturing of the system. In addition, this technology incur more manufacturing cost while restricting the possibility of future upgrades modifications to the system. The thesis is part of the development project for the control system which aims to provide a standard, distributed, modular and modern design with more functionality, continuity and reliability features to cope with the market needs, reduce design time and cost. The development work is based on examining previous work and following a simplified product development process due to the choice of off-the shelf components. The thesis work resulted in the release of the system as a set of standard end product and the reduction of the cost of the system. In addition, several supporting documents were produced as part of the thesis work.
