Abstract

Vuolteenaho (2002) researched the contribution of net income and operating cash flow effects on the return of stocks. Vuolteenaho made findings in several industries in the United States of America. However, the finance industry was omitted in his research, and I will research whether the findings of Vuolteenaho will hold true also in the finance sector. The Vuolteenaho study (2002) contains three major findings. Firstly, the firm level stock returns are mainly driven by shocks into cash-flow news. Secondly, the cash-flow news is positively correlated with shock to expected returns. The correlation appears to be high for the smaller firms and almost zero for the largest companies. Thirdly, the cash-flow news is easier to diversify away than the expected returns news because the cash-flow news seems to be firm specific, and the expected returns seems to be market-wide. Since the logic of the financial sector is different from traditional industrial sectors, I investigate the interest rate effects instead of cash-flow news on the returns of the finance sector stocks. This study also explores how the book-to-market ratio and earnings contribute towards the stock returns in the finance sector. The study utilizes vector autoregression to explore the response to a shock in the respective variables. My results indicate the interest rate and earnings to have a positive impact on the returns, while the book-to-market ratio gives a negative effect. The findings are somewhat similar to Vuolteenaho (2002): the shocks cause a bit delayed momentum to the stock return, which diminishes over time. As did Vuolteenaho, so does this study find evidence towards the momentum and price delay effects. In this study, the shocks caused permanent effect to the stock return. The magnitude of permanent effect was, however, lower than Vuolteenaho. My findings indicate the shock to cause mostly temporary effects in stock returns in finance industry.

Vuolteenaho (2002) tutki, kuinka kassavirta- ja odottamattoman tulon informaatio vaikuttavat osakkeen kokonaistuottoon. Vuolteenahon tutkimus käsitti kyseiseen ajankohtaan kaikki toimialat paitsi finanssisektorin. Minä keskityn tutkimaan, pätevätkö Vuolteenahon löydökset myös finanssisektoriin. Vuolteenahon (2002) tutkimuksessa oli kolme merkittävää havaintoa. Ensimmäiseksi shokit kassavirtauutisiin olivat vaikutukseltaan merkittävin tekijä osakkeen tuoton näkökulmasta. Toiseksi kassavirtauutiset ja odottamattoman tulon uutiset olivat positiivisesti korreloituneet keskenään. Korrelaatio oli voimakkaampi pienemmillä yhtiöillä ja lähes nolla suurimmilla yhtiöillä. Kolmanneksi kassavirtauutisten vaikutus oli helpompi hajauttaa pois portfoliosta. Tämä johtui siitä, että kassavirtauutiset vaikuttivat olevan yhtiötason uutisia, kun taas odottamattoman tulon uutiset vaikuttivat olevan systeemisiä, koko markkinan laajuisia uutisia. Koska Vuolteenahon tutkimus ei suoraan sovellu finanssisektoriin, käytän tutkimuksessani kassavirtauutisten sijaan Yhdysvaltojen keskuspankin korkotason vaikutusta. Tämän lisäksi tutkin, miten tulos sekä kirjanpitoarvon ja markkina-arvon välinen suhdeluku vaikuttavat osakkeen kokonaistuottoon finanssisektorilla. Hyödynnän tutkimuksessani vektoriautoregressiota kuvaamaan, kuinka shokki edellä mainituissa muuttujissa vaikuttaa osakkeen kokonaistuottoon. Tutkimukseni perusteella korkotasolla ja tuotoilla on positiivinen vaikutus osakkeen kokonaistuottoon. Sen sijaan kirjanpitoarvon suhteella markkina-arvoon on negatiivinen vaikutus kokonaistuottoon. Löydökseni ovat jossain määrin yhteneviä Vuolteenahon (2002) kanssa: Shokit tuovat hieman viiveellä momenttiefektin, joka ajan mittaa kuihtuu pois. Vuolteenahon tavoin, tutkimukseni löysi lisäevidenssiä hinta viiveen olemassaololle. Tässä tutkimuksessa shokeilla oli pysyvä vaikutus osakkeen tuottoon, joskin pysyvänn vaikutuksen suuruus oli hyvin rajallinen. Verrattuna Vuolteenahon tutkimuksen shokkien pysyvän vaikutuksen tasoon, jäi finanssisektorin pysyvän vaikutuksen taso huomattavasti Vuolteenahon tuloksista. Tulokseni siis indikoivat finanssisektorin kokevan vain väliaikaisia shokkeja yhtiötasolla.
