Abstract
The objectives of this thesis were to define and describe the design for assembly (DFA) process for an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider and to create checklists for terminal products for helping the DFA work. The design for X (DFX) methodologies are briefly introduced in addition to the DFA method. Guidelines for DFA are presented carefully enough to give a good basic understanding of the DFA method. The general DFA process is described and the elements of the DFA process are discussed. The DFA process for an EMS provider is formed and described in more detail. In addition, automatic and manual assembly costs were compared and interesting results were found, causing pressure towards automatic assembly in the future. In this study, the labour cost was the critical factor. Finally, a case study was carried out and a DFA analysis was performed. This DFA analysis was completed applying the point of view of an EMS provider. Also, two DFA software were tested and the DFA analysis of the case study was compared.
