Abstract
The thesis discusses femininity through the costume design process for the science fiction short film Memorabilia (dir. by Roosa Vuokkola, 2025) and consists of an artistic component and written part. The work is in conversation with literature on feminism, queer theory, androcentrism, feminized labour, and costume design, and reflects on these topics from the position of a queer costume designer. During the writing process, the theme of ‘skirt’ arose to carry through the work, since as a symbol it reflects many different outlooks and conversations on femininity and dress. Femininity was chosen as the topic of this thesis as a repeated point of curiosity and inspiration throughout my costume design studies, and due to discovering of the history of costume design as a female dominated field. The film Memorabilia provided a suitable platform to dive deeper into this theme with its historically male-dominated genre of science fiction, while featuring an all-female cast, female producers and a queer director. The goal of this thesis is to introduce costume designers to some of the existing theoretical frameworks that have shaped contemporary conversations on femininity, particularly in relation to dress and self-presentation, and to show how androcentrism in a society can affect both the artistic and social aspects of our work. Another important aim of the thesis is to process and articulate personal wishes and aspirations for future work in costume in the film industry from the perspective of a designer at the start of their career. The main methods of the research include a literature review focused on feminism and queer theory, together with artistic practice undertaken during the costume design process for the film Memorabilia.Opinnäyte käsittelee feminiinisyyttä science fiction -elokuva Memorabilian (ohj. Roosa Vuokkola, 2025) pukusuunnitteluprosessin kautta, ja koostuu kirjallisesta ja taiteellisesta osasta. Työ keskustelee feminismi-, queer teoria-, feminisoitunut työ-, ja androsentrismi-aiheisen kirjallisuuden kanssa, ja tarkastelee näitä teemoja queer-pukusuunnittelijan positiosta. Tutkimuksen aikana ’hame’ nousi työn läpi leikkaavaksi teemaksi, koska symbolina se heijastelee monia näkökulmia ja keskusteluja feminiinisyydestä ja pukeutumisesta. Feminiinisyys valikoitui opinnäytteen aiheeksi herätettyään teemana kiinnostusta ja inspiraatiota läpi pukusuunnittelun opintojen, ja pukusuunnittelun naisvaltaisesta historiasta oppimisen myötä. Lyhytelokuva Memorabilian miesvaltainen science fiction -genre, kokonaan naisista koostuva hahmokaarti, naistuottajat, ja queer-ohjaaja tarjosivat osuvan alustan sukeltaa syvemmälle teemaan taiteellisessa tutkimuksessa. Opinnäytteen tavoitteena on esitellä pukusuunnittelijoille joitakin teorioita feminiinisyyttä, pukua, ja itseilmaisua linkittävien nykykeskustelujen takana, ja näyttää, miten yhteiskunnan androsentrisyys voi vaikuttaa työhömme pukusuunnittelijoina taiteellisesti ja sosiaalisesti. Toinen tärkeä työn tavoite on käsitellä ja sanoittaa elokuvan pukusuunnitteluun liittyviä tavoitteita ja toiveita uraansa aloittelevan pukusuunnittelijan näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen metodeina on käytetty feminismiin, queer-teoriaan, ja pukusuunnitteluun painottuvaa kirjallisuuskatsausta, yhdessä Memorabilia-elokuvan pukusuunnitteluprosessissa toteutetun taiteellisen tutkimuksen kanssa.Description
