Abstract

This thesis investigates how design thinking is defined in a business context and what is the role of management in integrating design thinking into organizations. Integrating design thinking into the organization means that the tools, practices, and processes, and mindset of design thinking are adopted and utilized by everyone in the organization. This is believed to bring differentiation via innovativeness and being a source of competitive advantage to the company. The definition of design thinking in the business context is clarified and explained how adopting the design thinking approach is perceived to create value. The role of the management in integrating design thinking into organizations is evaluated through three aspects: creating the legitimacy of design thinking, building the organizational capability, and evaluating the cultural readiness for integration. It is concluded that the role of management during the integration process is under researched and more empirical research is needed to evaluate what is needed from top management support and how the desired capabilities are achieved.
