Abstract

Growing regulatory demands and stakeholder expectations have heightened the importance of transparent human rights practices in corporate value chains. Despite the increased attention to human rights due diligence (HRDD), limited research has explored how sustainability professionals operationalize these requirements in practice. This thesis investigates how Finnish Big Four firms support companies in reporting and assuring human rights in global supply chains under emerging EU regulation. Based on sixteen semi-structured interviews with sustainability professionals from all Big Four companies in Finland across assurance and advisory roles, the study examines how these experts interpret regulatory expectations and translate them into practical methodologies. The findings show that human rights assurance remains highly procedural, with professionals emphasizing the need to strengthen professional judgement and consistency across engagements. Coordination between advisory and assurance functions was identified as crucial for ensuring coherence in HRDD implementation, yet firm structures and independence rules often constrain collaboration. The study also reveals gaps in client preparedness, challenges in gathering reliable evidence from complex value chains, and inconsistent use of site visits and stakeholder input. The results underscore the evolving role of sustainability professionals as intermediaries who bridge regulation, corporate practice, and assurance. In doing so, the study contributes to the emerging literature on social assurance by clarifying how human rights become auditable within professional service firms. Practically, the findings offer guidance for enhancing the credibility and effectiveness of human rights assurance and consulting practices in light of the CSRD and CSDDD frameworks

Jatkuvasti kehittyvät sääntelyvaatimukset ja sidosryhmien odotukset ovat lisänneet läpinäkyvien ihmisoikeuskäytäntöjen merkitystä yritysten arvoketjuissa. Vaikka ihmisoikeuksiin liittyvää huolellisuusvelvoitetta (HRDD) on tutkittu yhä enemmän viimeisten vuosien aikana, harva tutkimus on selvittänyt, miten vastuullisuusasiantuntijat soveltavat näitä vaatimuksia käytännössä. Tämä tutkielma tarkastelee, miten Suomen Big Four -yritykset tukevat yrityksiä ihmisoikeuksien raportoinnissa ja varmentamisessa EU:n uuden sääntelyn kehyksessä. Tutkimus perustuu 16 puolistrukturoituun haastatteluun, jotka toteutettiin kaikissa Suomessa toimivissa Big Four -yrityksissä varmennusja neuvontatehtävissä työskentelevien asiantuntijoiden kanssa. Tulokset osoittavat, että ihmisoikeusvarmennus on edelleen menettelytapakeskeistä, ja ammattilaiset korostavat tarvetta vahvistaa ammatillista harkintaa ja yhdenmukaisuutta toimeksiannoissa. Neuvonta- ja varmennustiimien yhteistyö nähtiin tärkeänä HRDD:n johdonmukaisessa toimeenpanossa, mutta yritysrakenteet ja riippumattomuusvaatimukset rajoittavat sitä. Tutkimus korostaa vastuullisuusammattilaisten roolia välittäjinä, jotka yhdistävät sääntelyn, yrityskäytännöt ja varmennustoiminnan. Tulokset tarjoavat käytännön suosituksia ihmisoikeusvarmennuksen ja - konsultoinnin uskottavuuden vahvistamiseksi CSRD- ja CSDDD-kehysten valossa.
