Abstract
In 2010 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) agreed on the rules of the new Financial Fair Play (FFP). It’s a financial ruleset created to improve the financial health of European football clubs, as they had been making significant losses during the beginning of the 21st century.
This thesis examines the effects FFP has had since its implementation. The effects are examined from both financial and sporting aspects. The scope of the analysis is the Europe’s big five-leagues. This thesis uses a literature review to analyse the existing research around the topic.
The analysis shows that FFP has achieved its goal in improving the finan-cial health of football clubs in Europe, however the competitive balance has decreased on the side. The strongest evidence has been found in the Spanish La Liga on both financially and from the sporting perspective.
As FFP has succeeded in the way it was intended to, it has also had unin-tended effects on the sporting side of football. Future research will show us more evidence, as the FFP is still young, and the financial regulations keep adapting over the years.
