Abstract
Tämä tutkielma tarjoaa katsauksen siihen, miten japanilaiset filosofiat ja estetiikan periaatteet – erityisesti valon ja varjon vuoropuhelu, luonnon ja sisätilan yhteys sekä yksinkertaisuuden ja harmonian arvostus näkyvät perinteisessä japanilaisessa sisustusarkkitehtuurissa. Teksti avaa, kuinka wabi sabi, ma ja yūgen heijastuvat niin sisustusarkkitehtonisissa ratkaisuissa kuin koko kodin hengessä. Samalla lukija johdatetaan ymmärtämään, miten syvällä nämä esteettiset ja filosofiset periaatteet ovat japanilaisessa kulttuurihistoriassa – ja kuinka ne ovat muovautuneet ajan saatossa. Teksti herättää ajatuksen siitä, onko perinteinen japanilainen sisustusarkkitehtuuri näiden arvojen heijastumaa vai niiden mahdollistaja, ja laajentaa näin ymmärrystä kodin ja kulttuurin syvästä yhteydestä Japanissa.
This thesis offers an overview of how Japanese philosophies and aesthetic principles—particularly the dialogue between light and shadow, the connection between nature and interior space, and the appreciation of simplicity and harmony—are reflected in traditional Japanese interior architecture. The text explores how concepts such as wabi-sabi, ma, and yūgen are manifested both in architectural solutions and in the overall spirit of the home. At the same time, the reader is guided to understand how deeply rooted these aesthetic and philosophical principles are in Japanese cultural history—and how they have evolved over time. The text raises the question of whether traditional Japanese interior architecture is a reflection of these values or their enabler, thereby deepening our understanding of the profound connection between home and culture in Japan.
