Debt service ratio and interest rate spread in Finland - a time series analysis with vector autoregression and vector error correction

Abstract

Private sector indebtedness is a topical concern for those who have identified a connection between debt and the financial vulnerability of the economy. However, it is important to discuss indebtedness in conjunction with the disposable income to cover debt service costs, so that indebtedness is rather assessed in relative terms. The ratio of private sector debt service costs to income is called the debt service ratio, the time series data of which is compiled by the Bank for International Settlements. The banking sector is at the receiving end of the debt service costs. The primary task of the deposit banks is to provide loans to households and companies (excluding other financial companies, in this context), which together form the Finnish private sector. The interest portion of the periodic debt service costs is interest income for banks, but this concept, too, is more informative in its relative terms rather than absolute terms. To study interest income in relative terms, the average deposit interest rate can be reduced from the average loan interest rate, so that the profitability of traditional banking in Finland can be understood better. The difference between the average rates is called the interest rate margin, the data of which is compiled by the Bank of Finland. The debt service ratio (’DSR’) and the interest rate spread (’spread’) are central indicators of total debt, thus describing the relative cost to the borrowers and relative return to the lenders. This study examines these indicators in 2003-2020 in Finland, using macroeconomic variables through which the indirect relationship between the indicators can be assessed. After a thorough mapping of the time series properties of the initial data, a VAR model is formed with stationarized variables. Based on the Johansen test, it is concluded that linear combinations of nonstationary variables enable modelling stationary long run equilibriums for DSR and spread. The VEC model indicates that in the short run, there is statistically significant convergence of the DSR and the spread to their long run equilibrium states. As a separate part, the components of the DSR and the spread are assessed using covariance and correlation analysis to see which affect their time series variances the most. The results of this study can be of interest to those who, for example, consume banking services in Finland or have a professional interest in debt-related research. Immediately observable differences in interest rate spreads of banking groups can interest depositors and borrowers in Finland. The results of the time series vector modelling and the component covariances, on the other hand, may be most insightful to economic researchers and decision-makers.

Yksityisen sektorin velkaantuneisuus on ajankohtainen huolenaihe tahoille jotka ovat tunnistaneet velkaantuneisuuden kytköksen talouden kriisiytymisherkkyyteen. On kuitenkin tärkeää keskustella velkaantuneisuudesta siten, että käytettävissä oleva tulo lainakustannusten kattamiseksi otetaan myös huomioon, jolloin velkaantuneisuutta voidaan tarkatella suhteellisesti. Yksityisen sektorin velanhoitokustannusten suhdetta tuloon kutsutaan velanhoitosuhdaksi (engl. ’debt service ratio’), ja sen aikasarjadataa tilastoi Bank for International Settlements. Velkakustannusten vastapuoli on pankkisektori. Talletuspankkien ensisijaisimpia tehtäviä on antaa lainoja kotitalouksille ja yrityksille (tässä yhteydessä poislukien muut rahoitusyritykset), jotka muodostavat Suomen yksityisen sektorin. Laina-asiakkaiden lainakustannusten korko-osuus realisoituu pankeille korkotuotoksi, mutta tätäkin käsitettä on suotuisampaa tarkastella ennemmin sen suhteellisessa kuin absoluuttisessa merkityksessä, eli vähentäen antolainauksen korkotuotosta talletuskorkomeno, jolloin perinteisen pankkitoiminnan tuottavuutta Suomessa voidaan ymmärtää paremmin. Lainojen ja talletusten keskikorkojen erotusta kutsutaan korkomarginaaliksi, ja tätä tilastoi suomalaisen talletuspankkisektorin osalta Suomen Pankki. Velanhoitosuhta ja korkomarginaali ovat tärkeitä yksityisen sektorin kokonaisvelkaan liittyviä indikaattoreita, jotka siis kuvaavat velasta koituvaa suhteellista kulua ja tuottoa. Tämä tutkimus tarkastelee näitä indikaattoreita vuosina 2003-2020 Suomessa käyttäen hyväksi makrotalouden muuttujia, joiden kautta voidaan arvioida indikaattorien välillistä yhteyttä. Läpikotaisen aikasarjaominaisuuksien kartoittamisen jälkeen stationarisoiduista muuttujista muodostetaan VAR-malli. Johansen-testin perusteella todetaan, että epästationaaristen muuttujien lineaaristen kombinaatioiden avulla voidaan myös VEC-mallintaa stationaariset pitkän aikavälin tasapainotilat korkomarginaalille ja velanhoitosuhdalle. Lyhyellä aikavälillä indikaattorit konvergoituvat pitkän aikavälin tasapainoihinsa tilastollisesti merkitsevästi. Korkomarginaalin ja velanhoitosuhdan osatekijöiden merkittävyyttä indikaattorien aikasarjoissa arvioidaan kovarianssi- ja korrelaatioanalyysin avuin. Tutkimustulokset voivat kiinnostaa sellaisia tahoja, joilla on esimerkiksi pankkipalveluiden kuluttajana tai ammatillisen asemansa puitteissa intressejä velkaantumiseen liittyvään tutkimukseen. Välittömästi nähtävät erot pankkiryhmien korkomarginaaleissa ovat kiinnostavia tallettajille ja lainaajille Suomessa. Vektorimallinnoksien ja osatekijäanalyysien tulokset taas voivat olla kiinnostavimpia erityisesti muille talouden tutkijoille ja päättäjille.
