Abstract
The rapid deployment of electric vehicles (EV) in the transportation sector is adding new requirements to the electricity infrastructure. The interest of utility providers is in the charging network and the strain it will have on the electricity network. In this thesis, EV charging events were recorded across Finland and further analyzed within a small section of a metropolitan area together with hourly consumption data provided by Helen Sähköverkko Oy. Four neighboring areas from the center of Helsinki were analyzed and then simulated using different EV penetration levels and charger counts. There were no substantial load spikes in the monitoring data with current EV penetration levels and charging stations. The data from simulations with four times the charging demand showed charging load peaking at 8 percentage of the zone’s total consumption. The simulated EV charging loads within the area did not exceed levels beyond the capabilities of a well-planned electricity grid.
