Abstract

The construction industry needs to improve its productivity through digital transformation. Building Information Modelling (BIM) has emerged as the state of the art technology to manage construction design. With BIM, a building can be constructed virtually to uncover design flaws before breaking ground and the flow of design documentation can be managed. Several specialized stakeholders typically need to collaborate and concurrently build a digital model in BIM to make the design stage more efficient. Waste in the design phase manifests as errors caused by design work being done with incomplete starting information. Understanding how the actors in structural design and construction should collaborate and how metadata can be utilized to reduce waste is set as the main objective. The thesis takes a design science approach to frame the problem and describe mechanisms leading to design errors in a structural design project. No visibility of pending changes, poor knowledge retention, and a lack of information flow from production are identified as the root causes for poor performance. To address these issues, it is proposed that a collaborative data platform that enables deeper value chain integration should be developed. Additionally, a prototype that focuses on exchanging and collecting feedback metadata (i.e. Solution Experience Data, SED) from downstream production activities allowing structural designers to mitigate errors and learn from mistakes. An evaluation with industry experts based on the developed prototype to utilize SED tentatively confirms the concept’s potential to improve the efficiency of collaboration in the structural design and construction value chain as well as increasing the productivity of structural designers. In summary, adopting the collaborative data platform offers direct human-to-human communication between relevant stakeholders, improved change management and a foundation for data driven design automation.

Byggbranschen strävar efter förbättrad produktivitet genom digital transformation. Byggnadsinformationsmodellering (BIM) är den mest använda teknologin för att hantera design av byggnader. Genom att skapa en virtuell kopia av byggnaden i BIM kan brister i designen blottläggas och flödet av designdokumentation hanteras. Flera specialiserade aktörer samarbetar vanligtvis i BIM för att framkalla den digital modellen, vilket gör designfasen mera produktiv. Slöseri (eng. Waste) i designfasen uppstår på grund av bristfällig utgångsinformation och ter sig som fel i byggmodellen. Att förstå hur aktörerna inom konstruktion och konstruktion ska samverka och hur metadata kan användas för att minska slöseri är arbetets huvudmål. Avhandlingen ramar in problemet och beskriver de mekanismer som leder till designfel i ett strukturellt byggprojekt med hjälp av ett tillvägagångssätt baserat på design science. Grundorsakerna för låg produktivitet identifierades som bristande synlighet av kommande förändringar, svårigheter att bevara kunskap och en avsaknad av informationsflöde tillbaka från produktionen till designern. För att lösa problematiken föreslås det att en dataplattform som binder samman leveranskedjan ska utvecklas. Dessutom utvecklas en prototyp som fokuserar på att utbyta och samla in feedback-metadata (dvs. Solution Experience Data, SED) från produktionen, vilket gör det möjligt att förhindra felaktig design och lära sig av misstag. En utvärdering med branschexperter baserad på den utvecklade prototypen bekräftar preliminärt konceptets potential att förbättra samarbetets effektivitet i värdekedjan för strukturell design och konstruktion samt potentialen i att öka produktiviteten bland strukturella designers. Sammanfattningsvis erbjuder dataplattformen direkt kommunikation mellan samarbetande aktörer, förbättrad hantering av förändringar till byggnadsinformationsmodellen samt och en grund för datadriven automatisering av design.
