Abstract
The objective of this thesis was to emphasize the effects of corruption on multinational corporations conducting trade between Mombasa, Kenya, and the border town of Nimule, South Sudan, in East Africa. The research included interviews with different stakeholders from the port of Mombasa, Kenya, to Nimule, South Sudan, and also to Juba, the capital city of South Sudan, during a field trip. The findings were categorized into three codes and analysed using thematic analysis to determine the most commonly used terms on the Mombasa and Nimule routes. The terms that were used repeatedly include "Toa kitu kidogo" (give some-thing), "Support your documents," "cup of tea," "breakfast or lunchtime," "no fuel," "refill my ink," "pour oil on my knees," "be creative and do something," "airtime," "speak understandable language," "be a man or woman of the people," "she/he has low blood," and "Nyaam" (which means eating and refers to paying a considerable amount of money which is relatively expensive in terms of value). The thesis argues that corruption has a significant impact on multinational corporations. It hinders the transfer of knowledge and technical skills to local companies. Additionally, corruption deters foreign investment, leading to increased un-employment. It also undermines fair competition between companies, resulting in failed projects and poor service delivery.
