Abstract

The addition of frothers in flotation has two main functions, to help reduce bubble size and help produce a stable froth. In this study, the effect of frother concentrations and their types on the bubbles generated in Shear Flow Observation Chamber (SOC) was carried out. Flotation frothers DF-200, DF 250 and NF-240 was chosen to test the effect of bubble coalescence and the bubble break-up process. The method of generating and photographing bubbles from a SOC was combined with modern methods of image processing and analysis. Two observation areas used to monitor the behaviour of the bubbles in SOC using two cameras. The recorded videos were analysed with the ImageJ Analysis Program. The measured parameters are the horizontal and the vertical diameter of the bubbles. From this Sauter mean bubble diameter was calculated. The obtained experimental data shows the effect of how the bubble sizes varies in presence or absence of dynamic condition where the medium contains different frother's type and concentrations. It also shows the effect of air flow rate and the frother concentration on bubble size.
