Defining manufacturing execution system requirements in the production of the case company

Abstract

In this thesis, the benefits of a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) are clarified in the production of the case company. The aim of this thesis is to define a suitable MES for the plant of the case company. In addition, the theory of the thesis creates a unified vision of the MES of the entire plant.

The first part of the thesis is a literature review. It focuses on operational processes and functions of the MES. ISA-95, which is an international standard, has been used as a frame of reference. Additionally, the literature review presents potential benefits of the MES according to literature and previous studies. At the end of the literature review system integration is defined briefly.

The second part of the thesis consists of an empirical research. Interviewing is used as a main research method. The data were collected by interviewing personnel two different times. The object of the first round interviews is to carry out a preliminary report of activities of different departments. The second round interviews concentrate more on the MES. The main purpose is to define the present and target state of the plant. The final result of the thesis is a list of requirements for the MES. Furthermore, a rough estimate of a budget is presented by a few suppliers. The research results provide more detailed information for an eventual procurement decision of the MES.

Tässä diplomityössä selvitetään valmistuksenohjausjärjestelmän, eli MES-järjestelmän, mahdollisia hyötyjä case-yrityksen tuotantoympäristössä. Työn tavoitteena on määritellä case-yrityksen tuotantoon sopiva MES-järjestelmä. Lisäksi työn teoriaosuuden halutaan tuovan selkeän ja yhteisen näkemyksen MES-järjestelmän toiminnasta koko tehtaalle.

Diplomityön alkuosassa on teoriaosuus, jossa määritellään MES-järjestelmän toimintaprosessit ja niihin kuuluvat tehtävät. MES-järjestelmän määrittelyn viitekehyksenä on käytetty kansainvälistä ISA-95 standardia. Teoriaosuudessa esitellään lisäksi MES-järjestelmän tuotannollisia hyötyjä kirjallisuuden ja aikaisempien tutkimusten mukaan. Teoriaosuuden lopussa selvitetään lyhyesti, mitä järjestelmäintegraatiolla tarkoitetaan.

Työn toinen osa koostuu empiirisestä osuudesta. jossa tutkimusmenetelmänä on käytetty haastatteluita. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin kahdella eri haastattelukierroksella. Tutkimusaineiston analysoimisessa käytettiin teoriaosuudessa esitettyjä malleja. Ensimmäisen kierroksen tarkoituksena on suorittaa yleisellä tasolla tehtaan esiselvitys. Toisella kierroksella keskitytään puolestaan tehtaan nyky- ja tavoitetilaselvitykseen. Tavoitetilaselvityksen lopputuloksena saadaan MES-järjestelmän vaatimuslista case-yrityksen tuotantoon. Lisäksi MES-järjestelmälle määritellään tutkimustulosten perusteella karkea budjettiarvio muutaman järjestelmätoimittajan toimesta. Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on tuoda lisätietoa case-yrityksen mahdollisen MES-järjestelmän hankintapäätöksen tueksi.
