Abstract
Research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) has experienced a rapid increase in past few years and AI is one of the fastest developing technologies at the moment. In business context startups are often able to adopt to the new technologies the fastest and therefore it is crucial to understand how startups are utilizing AI in their business models. However, there are only a few studies made on AI-based startups business models so far. This thesis focuses only on generative AI. Generative AI differs from more traditional forms of AI by being able to generate new content on its own with only a short, natural language text given as a prompt. Generative AI is then divided into different categories based on what type of content the AI can create. Five different categories were chosen in this thesis for AI-generated content: text, images, speech, videos, and code. Different generative AI tools developed by wide variety of startups were tested and only the best performing ones were chosen for further analysis. Only one startup in each five previously mentioned categories of generative AI were chosen for analysis. After choosing the startups, new comparison framework was created for comparing the business models of the startups. The comparison framework was created based on previous literature and previous frameworks on business models. All of the startups analyzed in this thesis were using subscription-based business model and most of them used so called “freemium” pricing strategy. When it comes to AI infrastructure startups generating text and code were using transformer-based models and startups generating images and videos were using diffusion models.
