Abstract

Tämä opinnäyte tarkastelee noitien representaatioita elokuvassa ja kirjoittajan taiteellisessa työssä: lyhytelokuvassa Matalapaine. Opinnäytteen tavoitteena on syventää ymmärrystä siitä, miten noitahahmojen visuaaliset piirteet vaikuttavat pukusuunnitteluun ja miten niitä voidaan käyttää moniulotteisen noitamaisen hahmon rakentamisessa. Opinnäyte pyrkii vastaamaan tutkimuskysymykseen: miten hyödyntää noidan hahmotrooppia vanhemman noitamaisen naishahmon pukusuunnittelussa? Opinnäytetyö yhdistää taiteellista tutkimusta audiovisuaalisen aineiston analyysiin ja kirjallisiin lähteisiin pohjaavaan taustatutkimukseen. Opinnäyte erittelee noitiin, noidiksi syytettyihin ja noitahahmoihin liitettyjä piirteitä ja esittelee niiden pohjalta noitahahmojen kolmijaon: akka, viisas nainen ja neito sekä domestikoituneen noidan käsitteen. Elokuvien Lumikki ja seitsemän kääpiötä (1937), Ihmemaa Oz (1939), Suspiria – tappavat huokaukset (1977) ja The Witch (2015) noitahahmoja analysoimalla noituutta rakentaviksi keinoiksi tunnistetaan: musta vaatetus, kartionmallinen päähine, vanhuus, länsimaisesta kauneusihanteesta poikkeaminen, poikkeava iho, kyky muodonmuutokseen, yhteys luonnonilmiöön, eläimeen sekä tilaan tai esineeseen. Taiteellisessa osassa hahmon Eukko pukusuunnitteluprosessin pohdintaa informoi analyysissä esiin tulleet noituuden piirteet. Pukusuunnittelullisia valintoja ohjaa kirkkaimpana ajatus Eukon rakentamisesta syväksi, historiaa ja tulevaisuutta kantavaksi ja katsojassa empatiaa herättäväväksi hahmoksi hänen noituutensa kommunikoinnin sijasta. Noitamaisuutta lisääviä piirteitä hyödynnettiin kuitenkin tukemaan lyhytelokuvan vaatimaa uhan ja hahmolle tarpeellista voimakkuuden korostamista. Työ osoittaa, että noidan hahmotrooppien tuntemus voi toimia pukusuunnittelijan sisäisenä työkaluna, joka ohjaa hahmosuunnittelua stereotyyppien purkamisen ja hahmon syventämisen suuntaan.

This thesis examines representations of witches in film and in the author’s artistic practice in the short film, Matalapaine. The aim of the thesis is to deepen the understanding of how the visuality of the witch figure influences costume design and how they can be utilized in constructing a multidimensional, witch-like character. The central research question is: How can the witch trope be used in the costume design of an older, witch-like female character? The thesis combines artistic research with the analysis of audiovisual material and literature- based contextual study. It explores traits associated with witches, those accused of witchcraft, and fictional witch characters, and presents a tripartite classification of witch figures: the hag, the wise woman, and the maiden, alongside the concept of the domesticated witch. By analyzing witch characters from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), The Wizard of Oz (1939), Suspiria (1977), and The Witch (2015), the thesis identifies key visual elements that construct witchiness: black clothing, a conical headdress, old age, deviation from Western beauty norms, unusual skin, shapeshifting abilities, and associations with natural phenomena, animals, spaces, or objects. In the artistic component, the design process for the character Eukko is informed by the features of witchiness identified in the analysis. The design choices are primarily guided by the idea of Eukko as a layered figure who carries both history and future – one who evokes empathy in the viewer – rather than by a direct expression of her witchiness. However, selected witch-like elements were used to support the sense of threat and power required by the short film’s narrative. This work demonstrates that familiarity with the tropes of the witch figure can function as an internal tool for costume designers, guiding character creation toward a more nuanced and stereotype-challenging direction.
