Abstract

This study explores the viability of subscription services as a distribution channel for indie game developers. The literature review identified 3 ways in which subscription services could change the market environment for indie games. The effects of these changes were evaluated by using semi-structured interviews to gain the perspectives of people with experience in the gaming industry. This study found that indie game development would be affected in terms of revenue streams, market visibility/player engagement and creative freedom/control.
