Abstract
The objective of this thesis is to investigate the feasibility of cooperation in establishing a joint venture called Technology Centre (TC) in China. This TC focuses on Forest Products Technology. The thesis has adopted the typical methods of studying feasibility of business projects by using literature review and meta-analysis, interviews, and the common tools in business venture analysis. The two main tools are PESTEL and SWOT. The primary conclusion of this study is that the project of the TC is feasible but includes many uncertainties and risks. The main advantages are the high potential of business growth, and the competence of academic staffs. The main disadvantages are the lack of previous experience in executing such a joint venture and fast-changing external environment. South China University of Technology (SCUT) was concluded to be the ideal counterpart of Aalto University for the TC project from an academic point of view. SCUT has a strong academic track-record, high interest in the cooperation, and supportive external environment. However, because the weight of different services of the TC has not been decided yet, Nanjing Forestry University (NFU) is another ideal counterpart if the TC focuses more on commercial development. Seminars, academic exchange programmes and short-term courses are welcomed by the Chinese. Joint master's programme and joint research projects are also much appreciated. Linkage Programme is the least-desirable service.Description
