Abstract

This thesis examines the epistemic-ontological foundations of the theory of visual thinking within the field of art education. The thesis focuses on the question of how different conceptions of knowledge, being and perception influence the formation of theories of visuality and visual thinking and the differences between them. As fundamental concepts in art education, visuality and visual thinking are here approached as part of a broader theoretical discussion that contributes to the field’s basic research. The thesis examines the theory of visual thinking and the concepts of visuality and the visual, based on Marjo Räsänen (2015) and Taneli Tuovinen’s (2019) research. These theories are approached through the philosophical ontology of Gilles Deleuze (1925–1995), and in particular, his concepts of the virtual, the actual and immanence. Deleuze’s ontology and the selected concepts serve as the theoretical framework, which is used to examine how thinking is produced by the theory of visual thinking and what kind of thinking underlies its formation. In addition to its epistemic-ontological inquiry, the thesis addresses the questions of the direction and formation of thought that arise from the theory of visual thinking. The observations that emerged during the research process highlighted the significance of the movement of thought, which in turn created the need to examine the formation of thought. Its examination became a goal in this research alongside the conceptual and theoretical research. Methodologically, this research is grounded in a post qualitative research and partially intersects with artistic research. The conceptual and philosophical mapping is complemented by drawing as a research method. Both approaches indicate the ways in which thinking takes shape in the interaction between visual thinking and expression. In the thesis, the drawings are presented as visual conclusions alongside the written ones. This thesis suggests that visual thinking may be understood as having a foundation that exceeds descriptions reducible to representations and appearance alone. Visual thinking is described as having the potential to appear as a multidirectional state of thought, where thinking can reach an encounter that has not yet been structured or conceptualized in understanding. The results expand descriptions of forms of thinking that seek to reach vague, unformed, and emerging dimensions of experience.

Opinnäyte tarkastelee kuvataidekasvatuksen alan visuaalisen ajattelun teorian episteemis-ontologisia perusteita. Työn lähtökohtana on kysymys siitä, millaiset käsitykset tiedosta, olemisesta ja havaitsemisesta vaikuttavat visuaalisuutta ja visuaalista ajattelua koskevien teorioiden muodostumiseen ja niiden eroihin. Käsitteet visuaalisuus ja visuaalinen ajattelu ovat kuvataidekasvatuksen peruskäsitteitä, ja niiden teoreettinen tarkastelu tunnistetaan opinnäytteessä alan perustutkimukseen osallistuvaksi keskusteluksi. Tutkielma tarkastelee visuaalisen ajattelun teoriaa sekä visuaalisuuden ja visuaalisen käsitteitä erityisesti Marjo Räsäsen (2015) ja Taneli Tuovisen (2016) tutkimusten pohjalta. Valittuja teorioita lähestytään filosofi Gilles Deleuzen (1925–1995) ontologian ja erityisesti sen virtuaalisen, aktuaalisen ja immanenssin käsitteiden kautta. Deleuzen ontologia ja valitut käsitteet toimivat tutkielman teoreettisena viitekehyksenä, jonka avulla tarkastellaan, millaista ajattelua visuaalisen ajattelun teoria tuottaa ja millaisesta ajattelusta se on muodostunut. Episteemis-ontologisten perusteiden ohella opinnäyte käsittelee visuaalisen ajattelun teoriasta nousevia ajattelun suunnan ja muotoutumisen kysymyksiä. Tutkielmatyön aikana nousseet havainnot ajattelun liikkeen merkityksestä loivat tarpeen ja tavoitteen tarkastella ajattelun muotoutumista käsite-teoreettisen tutkimisen rinnalla. Metodologisesti tutkielma nojaa jälkilaadulliseen tutkimusotteeseen ja sivuaa taiteellista tutkimusta osalla menetelmistään. Käsitefilosofista kartoitusta täydentää piirtäminen tutkimusmenetelmänä. Piirtämistä käytetään osana jälkilaadullista tutkimusotetta kirjallisen tutkimisen rinnalla. Näin sekä kirjoitetun kielen että piirtämisen kautta tarkastellaan, miten ajattelu muotoutuu visuaalisen ajattelun ja ilmaisun vuorovaikutuksessa. Valmiit piirrokset ovat tutkielmassa esillä sen visuaalisina lopputuloksina kirjallisen tutkielmatekstin rinnalla. Tutkielma ehdottaa, että visuaaliselle ajattelulle voidaan ymmärtää perusta, joka ylittää pelkästään representaatioon ja ilmaantumiseen palautuvat kuvaukset. Visuaaliselle ajattelulle kuvaillaan mahdollisuus näyttäytyä monensuuntaisena ja edestakaisena ajattelun tilana, jossa ajattelulla on mahdollista tavoittaa sellaista kohdattua, joka ei ole vielä jäsentynyt tai käsitteellistynyt ymmärryksessä. Tulokset laajentavat sellaisten ajattelun muotojen kuvauksia, jotka pyrkivät tavoittamaan kokemuksen epämääräisiä, muotoutumattomia ja vasta tapahtumassa olevia ulottuvuuksia.
