Abstract
In the present study the design probes method and the focus group method have been combined in a new way. The objectives of the present study were to find out if the challenges of design probes can be tackled with the combined method and whether the advantages of both the design probes as well as the focus group can be reached by using the combined method. In the combined method during the study period the participants shared between them the results of the tasks they were given in the probe package. Sharing happened through internet and participants discussed about the tasks. This part is similar to an online focus group study. The present study is a single-case study. The material of the study consists of the online events and participants' answers to a questionnaire. To try out the method under inspection, the new extranet system called Purkki of Pääkaupunkiseudun partiolaiset ry was chosen as the context. The present study confirms that the used method partly tackles challenges of the design probes method and the advantages of design probes can be reached with some restrictions. The advantage of focus group can be reached. The method is suitable for studies in which the goal is to get knowledge about the use of a system or a product and to get ideas for improvement. Further research is required to determine the suitability of the combined method for other types of situations and contexts.Työssä on yhdistetty uudella tavalla käyttäjäkeskeisessä suunnittelussa käytettävät luotain- ja fokusryhmämenetelmä. Työn tavoitteena on selvittää pystytäänkö käytetyllä menetelmällä vastaamaan luotainmenetelmän haasteisiin ja toteutuvatko yhdistelmämenetelmässä luotainmenetelmän ja fokusryhmän tärkeimmät vahvuudet. Yhdistäminen toteutettiin siten, että luotaintehtävien tekemisen aikana osallistujat jakoivat yksilöinä tekemiensä tehtävien tuotokset toisilleen verkossa ja keskustelivat niihin liittyen. Näin ollen tehtäväjakso oli kuin verkossa toteutettava fokusryhmä. Kehitettyä menetelmää kutsutaan työssä fokusryhmäluotainmenetelmäksi. Tutkimus on tyypiltään yhden tapauksen case-tutkimus. Työssä analysoidaan kehitetyn menetelmän käytön aikaisia sähköisiä tapahtumia ja osallistujien vastauksia kyselyyn. Menetelmän kokeilemisen kontekstina on Pääkaupunkiseudun partiolaiset ry:n Purkki-niminen extranetjärjestelmä ja osallistujina järjestelmän aktiiviset käyttäjät. Tutkimuksen perusteella kehitetyllä menetelmällä pystytään vastaamaan yhteen kolmesta luotainmenetelmän haasteista, luotainmenetelmän vahvuudet toteutuvat tietyin rajoituksin ja fokusryhmän vahvuus toteutuu. Menetelmä sopii tutkimuksiin, joissa tavoitteena on kerätä osallistujien käyttämään tuotteeseen liittyviä kokemuksia ja kehitysideoita. Menetelmää tulisi tutkia lisää, jotta saataisiin varmistettua millaisille kaikille käyttäjäryhmille ja millaisiin kaikkiin konteksteihin menetelmä sopii.Description
