Abstract
Today when native mobile applications are competing with mobile web applications, we have witnessed the influx of new technologies and frameworks making the choice of any platform an increasingly vexing problem. HTML5 and JavaScript bring the hopes of cross-platform support and offer many new capabilities. Considering web technologies as a panacea, this thesis work evaluates the adequacy of these technologies for the development of a mobile application. Both the literature review and design science methods are applied in this thesis. The literature review is conducted to build an understanding about the event-based pub/sub and location-aware systems, and to study the mobile development landscape. In the design science part of the thesis a prototype based on the research interests in the area of location-aware event-based systems is developed. Purpose of the prototype is to practically assess how much of the requirements can be achieved by using web technologies only. Development of this prototype using only HTML5 and JavaScript resulted to the conclusion that the idea of cross-platform applications is still far from reality. At present, HTML5 and JavaScript might suffice the needs of traditional mobile web application development. But to implement applications with the requirements equivalent to the developed prototype, it would be more appropriate to the existing cross-platform frameworks.Description
